33" Tyres-How MUCH to trim guards???

I have a D2A with VNT, I/C, Tune, a 2" suspension lift on king springs and bilsteins. I am after a "tough tourer" that still serves as my daily driver, and thus dont really want to lift the car anymore. From my reading here, and on other websites (see the tips from LRA below), the concensus appears to be that I can fit 32" (265-75-16s) without fitting flares, using my existing wheels, and not bothering with changing diff ratios but if I want to go to 33", I probably need to trim the guards, use different offset wheels, change the diff ratios and put flares on. My question is, how MUCH trimming is involved to go to 33"? Id consider it if it meant trimming only the "single layer" metal away from the guards/doors....but if it meant any more than that, then Im not interested.

Between 31” to 32” in diameter on standard rim offset.
    REQUIRE
Discovery II owners will require no extra work.

Up to 33” in diameter on off set rims.
    Discovery II use +30mm rims
    REQUIRE
Discovery II owners will require flare kit and +ve 30 offset rims preferably 16"x 8"

Between 33” to 36” on offset rims.
    Discovery II use +30mm rims
    REQUIRE
Range Rover Classic and Discovery I will require a 2 - 2 1/2” body lift kit and will need to fit the XL White tiger flare kit.
Discovery II owners will require a 2" suspension lift and flare kit.

I think you will only have to trim the lower rear of the front guards and the plastic sill, I think the rear maybe ok , this is for standard rims.
Originatly I had 32 " with no guard cutting but the plastic sill at the front . Everything is cut now running 35" s and flares . I recon 33"s would make it with no cuts.

No need for guard trim just the plastic sill needs a small trim like what Mark(Baffle) said you also might need to put a couple washers on your steering stops to prevent your wheels rubbing on your trailing arms

What has been listed there is one way of doing it that uses a lot of product from LRA.

For 32's, just put them on with a bullbar - a 2" lifts look better

For 33's with 255/85-16 you will rub on the water bottle and you will rub on the inner guards at the front, even if you remove the inner guards plastic trim, you will only gain about 2mm worth of extra space - these are problem aspects that you wont find satisfactory, as in even over speed humps. You wont need to cut the guards at all and you wont need offset rims at all. With this size tyre, they are generally good within the guards, but when you load up the suspension bushes and the axles get some movement you willl also rub the guards as it is so tight.

In addition to this with (285/75-16) you run into rubbing issues where the tyre will rub around in the guards, panel edges on the front, plastic inner guards at the front etc, in the rear it can also rub on the metal trim around the door but this varies per vehicle. These have been fitted to some, but my testing shows that suspension that doesn't flex particularly well will work with this setup, and suspension that does flex generates rubbing.

To fit 33's or up to 35's you don't need flares, you don't need +30mm rims and these are not legal even if engineered and you don't need a body lift which more than likely wont be able to be approved due to the SRS airbags.

Info I forgot...I have an ARB sahara bar.

Slunnie, let me get this right:

For 33", I think what you are saying is that no matter which
of the two tyre options for this size (285/75 or 255/85), 2" is not enough, and there will be rubbing somewhere. Is that correct?

    Thats correct basically.

Stiff suspension or suspension without ACE will be less prone to rubbing when articulating, but when you hit bumps you'll still rub at the front. and when the axles move around on the bushes such as when banging around on rock steps and ruts you will also hear it contact a little bit.

People do run that tyre with 2" lifts, but they rub. To make it work with a 2" lift and without rubbing you'll need to either increase the bumpstop size or give it more lift that also involves a lower point where the suspension has maximum compression. There just isn't enough room under the front guards to make it work properly with 2". When I ran 255/85-16 with a King Springs 2" lift and bullbar it didn't work properly because of the washer bottle and the inner guard contacting the tyre - it wasn't a good setup at all as you're always tiptoeing.

Edit: These are pics of george and I testing 285/75 on his Disco which had a Lovells 2" lift then. They rubbed front and back on the steps and the suspension wasn't fully flexed.

I have to agree with Slunnie on this one. IMHO the 265/75's work really well on a 2" lift and will get you most places with minimal of fuss. Also with this size lift it all looks proportional and just sits right. I also ran this size tyre for a long time before changing my diff ratio's or doing any other serious mods.

There is a long running joke around that a D2 on 265's has the same diff clearance as a Patrol on 35's...

    Not a joke at all...

DIff clearance under the pumpkin is about 2" better on a Disco than a patrol or cruiser.

So a D2 on 33's is the same clearance under pumpkin as a Japper on 35's.

AHha, when I fitted 32,s it was with a 2" lift and new -26 rims, and rubbed the bottom trim, but no issues with steering lock, and flexed well . But did re do bump stop hights on the rear, I've munched the wiper water bottle into a good customized shape on the tracks ages ago
