Discovery 2 - not for the faint hearted?

Hi, there's some great advice in there, thank you all for taking the time to reply. I love the passion too! I have always liked LR even though I've never known much about them. I drove a mate's V8 Disco 1 on the beach, years ago, and have never forgotten the experience. So if I could be so bold as to ask a few more newbie questions to help me on my journey:

1. With regards to the Disco 2's, are there significant differences in each year's release? Apart from it just being newer, should I be striving for a 2004, for example?
2. I know fuel economy isn't the drawer card here, but I have to try and run this as cheaply as possible. In reality, is there a difference in fuel and servicing costs between the petrol and diesel versions? I think either would be more than sufficient for what I want to do, power-wise. Where I live, diesel is 125c and petrol is 115c. My driving pattern would be a 6kms return trip through suburbia to work 5 days per week and a 200kms trip up the beach or in the forest perhaps once a month, the odd trailer/boat tow.
3. Is there a milage range where things start to fall off? Obviously, it depends on types of miles, service history etc, but for example, is 200k on the clock a lot on a TD5, or is it just getting warmed up??

Again, any advice is greatly appreciated.

Seriously though, don't read this forum and draw the conclusion that D2's are a can of worms ... we all post about problems ... so you see a lot of "problems" posts. We don't all post that we went out today and nothing happened ;)

Like any peice of machinery. By a know good one, with a service history. Love it, look after it, don't abuse it, maintain it, learn about known issue's, address them BEFORE the become issues, and said peice of machinery will reward you with a long & satisfying ownership ... regardless of the make/model.

Being able to do your own routine maintenance instead of paying through the nose really helps, as you start to learn about your vehicle, and as you progress, you learn how to spot impending issues BEFORE they become terminal (ie:EXPENSIVE).

I got a D2 Td5 3 weeks ago.
I also own a p38 4.6.
Fuel wise the Td5 is amazing. A normal week in the Rangie was $120, the Td5 is running at $65-70 a week. This is why i bought it.
I just did a trip away on the weekend and all i can say is WOW this sucker is fast for a "diesel" it will cruise at 120k no problem, but dont expect to be able to overtake like a petrol engine.
I have 240k on the clock, burns no oil blows no smoke and has plenty of power. Looking at other posts it seems 400,000k is to be expected (i hope) from the engine.
As every one will tell you keep it serviced (easy enough to do on your own)

seriously though 6 kays is pretty close to being not worth starting it,
would MAYBE recharge the battery after starting,
would also be considered a HARSH enviroment, means extra servicing,

differences between D2 and D2a's ?

Totally agree - I ride to work every day (also 6Ks ) and the D2 only goes out when it will get fully warmed up. 6K's and it will be just up to temperature but wont last as long if it's doing frequent short runs.

I got my 2003 V8 in June last year & absolutely love it.:)

I did my research on this forum for a few months before purchase so I knew what to look for.

I joined the LROC of Brisbane as well just to give me more excuses to drive it.

Having said that I did have to replace the head gaskets a few weeks ago which cost $1700.

It now runs like a dream & I love it even more.

So that I don't get stung in the future I've started a savings acct specifically for maintenance & bits for the car.

I've even cut down on the beer purchases to help fund it.:eek:

That's how much I love my D2.

Having a D2 is not set & forget, it's an ongoing passion & lifestyle.

One which I'm enjoying a great deal.

If you get one you'll probably find yourself becoming more mechanically minded, just because you'll be crawling all over it at every opportunity just for fun.

The other thing is that some things in life do create a little more maintenance (and having an all alloy motor compared to a cast iron block is an example) and care but they are worth it. Once you drive a D2 you wouldnt enjoy a lifted Camry.
