D2 + Rhino Heavy Duty bars & legs

Fluids,only just seen this post.
I went through all this last year before a cape trip,mine are now not on the D2 ,so can't take any measurements.I could sit them on,but it's dark & raining.
I used the 210mm legs,no probs at all,ground the rear legs to clear the roof above the gutter.I used the standard brackets,as i thought the brackets you are gonna use may put a lot of weight at one end of the rail,particularly when travelling on corrugated roads.I don't have anything else on the roof though.The standard brackets sit on the bar,directly above the Rhino legs.My carport is also 2.5m high,so height was not a problem.
A couple of other things as well,the front bar was noisey,i moved to different places & it still "sang".I ended up covering it with aeroflex,that foam pipe insulation,used the 20mm wall stuff,no vibration at all.You can get it from Heatcraft or Actrol parts.
Also be very careful with the Foxwing in windy weather.We broke both brackets once as two of the guy ropes came off & the wind got under it& pulled off all the others.Make sure you ALWAYS use all the ropes on the poles at all times,and the largest pegs you can get.If it is going to be windy at night i always fold it up.

It survived our cape trip no worries,and worked well.

Yeah as above I have the Defender 210 legs plus spacers with the rear legs finessed to suit the curve of the Disco roof and the Foxwing mounted in standard upright position as this enables it to clear the roof above the door. I originally planned to mount it underslung but was warned against doing so....to be honest can't remember exactly why as it was some time ago. So far the Foxwing has proven to remarkably durable, takes a belting on the scratchy tracks no probs and has dealt with the standard howling West Oz sea breeze with no probs.

The way you've mounted you awning is exactly how I want the batwing mounted. NOT on top of the bar like the batwing is usually advertised.

I've just been downstairs, unpacked the batwing, and the rail it's all assembled to is 175mm high, the centre of each mounting channel is 37.5mm in from top & bottom. 100mm between mounting channels.

See the attached .pdf for the brackets I'm using. Shows the 2x methods and how the batwing sits in relation (prefer option B ... 210 legs (220?) + bar makes about 260, and the batwing frame is 175, and sits almost level with the top of the bars ... will 210 legs clear the roof rails ? Hhmmm ....

I have a D2 & use 210mm legs & 2 x 10mm spacers with the heavy duty bars.

I mounted an ARB awning of the side & used the Rhino mounts for the fox wing (same ones as in the PDF you posted)

I used 3 brackets & had no dramas on the CSR trip this year.

I'm on site at till Friday & can take some measurements & more photo's when I get home if you like.

Hi Paul. Thanks for that! I have a 2160mm RSJ I need to creep under in the driveway, otherwise it would just mount uptop. Shopping centre carparks are of no concern to me (but don't tell my wife I said that ! :twisted: )

Point noted about the ropes for the poles ... several people have warned me :eek: ... said to get LONG sand pegs for the beach. I am going to try green eco bags full of sand as a possible low wind alternative for the beach ... pegs are probably quicker.

As for the wind noise, I guess it's gonna be a suck it and see situation, and then see what solutions I can work, if it's an issue ... the foam you speak of is also available from a/c & refrig' suppliers.

Thanks again. Roger's post seems to have covered what I need, and I spoke to someone (a dimwit no less) at Rhino today and eventually got dimesions out of them .... HD bars are 41mm square, quoted legs heights are actual vertical heights.

Thanks Spenboyd! I did a rough measure up, and I think the back door will work OK if I end up using 210 legs. The top batwing bar is the one that will sit across the back of the disco, and underslung that bar will be about level with the HD bar.

I'll see soon enough how it copes with the howling winds on Stockton Beach!

Hello Roger. Thanks mate. Some more photo's and measurements would be great !

You used the Rhino bar end mounts with an ARB awning ?
Did you use Option A or B for the mounting ?
How high is the ARB awning back ?
You used 3x HD bars + mounts ?
How much does the ARB awning weigh ? (foxwing is 18.5kg)

The foxwing back (alloy extrusion 2.5m long) is 175mm high, with 2 x channels set 38mm in from each edge. If I use option B, the foxwing will hang down about 140mm from the centre of the HD bar ... my fear is that it may be too low for the 1st & 2nd sections when opened (ie:not enough headroom for standing) ... each section when opened, is higher than the previous (highest section will be the one over the back door).

I can flip the mounts (option A), but that would end up being higher than 280 legs mounted option B.

you can see from the photos where the lower hole is in the bracket for the fox wing monting track (I drilled a new lower hole to sit my ARB awning)
it's 25mm from the botom of the lower hole the the end of the bracket so I think you would be able to mount the fox wing & still open the doors.
as to being able to stand under it it's 125mm from the bottom of the bracket to the gutter.

the total height of the leg plus 20mm spacers & fox wing mounting bracket is 283mm

with 210 legs plus 20mm spacer gives you 18mm clearance from the bottom of the bar & the roof.

Thanks a heap for that Roger!

The Foxing alloy back spar will stick up 40mm (37.5 to be precise) above the two top mount bolt hole centres (so should be just a fraction above the HD bar rail / bracket top), and sticks down 40mm below the bottom mounting hole (the one with the cable tie in it - the foxwing alloy spar is as wide as the mounting bracket top to bottom), and your pics show that it should just fit without hitting the leg ... I hope. (Can always offset the HD bar to the left a smidge if it hits)

The foxwing won't hang below the rain gutter. If the total stacked height of yours is 283mm, then roughly, the foxwing will sit level with the top of the HD bar/bracket, and is 175mm high, meaning the botton of the foxwing alloy spar should be 108mm above the rain gutter, with the first, lower wing being a bit higher than that (25-30mm?) ! ... so I get about 1.82-1.83m under the first wing, that's against the passengers side of the D2. The next 3 wings are about 35mm higher succesivley.

My rain gutters are approx' 1700mm off the deck. I can gain another 50mm by using the SLS off-road height.

280 legs would be another 70mm higher, less the 20mm spacer, making it 333mm, less the 175mm making the bottom of the foxwing approx' 160mm above the rain gutter, (first wing approx 1890mm off the deck).

210 legs + 20mm spacer minimum carpark clearance required = 1983mm
280 legs minimum carpark clearance required = 2033mm

... 50mm difference.

I can add a 2" suspension lift with the 210 legs, have a flat mesh tray on the bars (with a 40/45mm dia outer tube), and still be under 2100mm :) (about 2080mm)

LOL! ... underground carparks with only a 20mm clearance ! MrsFluids WILL be happy :)

no they wont clear the bars, i placed the front bar over the crved section of the roof rails & the centre bar just behind the roof rail.
