Thay are bolted through the roof.
I recall somebody here quoting a 50 kg rating (I think). Not sure if that's per rail or for the pair.
Have a search on this forum, its a fairly recent thread.
Hey guys,
Just a quick question, are the D2 factory roof rails, strong and stable enough to put cross bars on them and use them for carrying a roof rack bag.
The seems to be only attached to the roof via an adhesive section at the bottom.
Feedback wanted.
Cheers,
Captcav

They are strong enough to carry light loads and are bolted to the roof. For normal roads they should be fine but if carrying loads on badly corrugated roads....I wonder - maybe someone else has had some first hand experience in such conditions.
I often carry a 30 something kg kyak on them and they have been just fine - even on rough roads.
If unsure, get some Rhino Racks - I also have a pair of those for my Supawing awning.

I've got two cross rails between mine, with a third adjustable one and separate tie-downs mounted in a pair of tracks on the rear section of the roof.
I've carried long lengths of timber, steel etc on mine many times without any problem at all - but as previously mentioned, that hasn't been over rough or corrugated roads.
Provided you don't overload the roof rack bag with anything too heavy, I don't see that there's any problem. Landrover rates the pair at 50kg capacity.
Cheers .........
