    Tyres, yes again, but different.

I have searched but it seems my wants are a little different to most of the results I found. It's time to replace the BFG AT on the 2003 Disco and looking at options. Goodyears 25% special was appealing but they don't do the US made Silent Armours in a 235 16 or a 245 16.

I have been in to two tyre retailers and whilst both did their best to help neither had any real world experience.

So usage, I want a tyre that is first and foremost a gripper road tyre, but one that can handle some rough stuff. The BFG's are pretty scratched and cut up and missing chunks of rubber around the place, but my use for the car has changed. Now I'm more interested in keeping the littl'ies safe on the road, so I can trade rarely driving across rocks in exchange for stopping a few meters earlier in the wet.

Off road, there's probably going to be nothing too rough, but there will be quite a bit of sand work, and I'll be towing a camper behind us. The wheel track on the camper is wider than the Disco's track so in the soft sand the cars certainly working.

So I need a sticky road tyre that's great in the sand and can handle some offroad stuff without falling apart. And there's rarely be any mud work, the Disco is really for getting our camper and the kids to some out of the way areas, not really a mud wallower or rock hopper.

The Silent Armours seemed great but they don't do the size, and the tyre places have no real experience, although they tried to guess what they would do, with one place saying the Cooper ATR's would be their choice.

    Thanks !!

    yokahama Geo landers.
    $250 per tyre.
They have deal on at the moment replacement of tyre if damaged on a % basis of cost so if 20% worn and you stake one they will replace them at 80% of cost. Pretty darn good deal. And you also get free puncture repairs for the life of the tyre.
I have them on a Disco2 and a P38 and on road they are very sure footed and i dont have any probs with them on a track either.

    Pirelli Scorpion ATR.

I have these in 245/70 16 LT on my Rangie. I do a lot of highway km and they are very good on the blacktop.

I have also used them in sand and mud, although not much rock work. They have surprised me with how good they have been.

I was originally going to fit BFG All Terrains but I have not regretted fitting the Pirellis. They were significantly cheaper too!

Got the Goodyear Silent Armour AT/SA in 245/70/16 on my D2.They have done the Gibb rv, gunbarrel and Canning stock route, and also the daily driver tyre thaat's been thru 2 topend wet seasons..

Sure they are scuffed and chipped but haven't had a flat yet..Dont get them if you are planning on any Mud, but otherwise they seem pretty good so far..

    Hello sandyian,

If you are really concerned about the safety aspect, hang the expense and get a second set of rims with H/Ts'. The best thing that I've done so far is to have two sets of rims and tyres - a set of HT's and a set of MT's. HT's are a small piece of heaven for driving around town and it saves wasting the MT's where they're not meant to be used. You can pick up a set 5 of P38 alloys in good nick for under $350 if you search enough. The expense of a second set of tyres and rims has been well worth the expense from my experience.

    Cheers,

    Jason

Second vote for Pirelli ATR. Paid $208 per tyre in 235 16 70

Have had these on mine for about 3 months and cant fault them on the black stuff ... did some light off-road stuff on the weekend and they performed well.

Can't comment on longevity, but I bought these ATR tyres for the same reasons as you, I wanted something safe for my family car that does 90% of it's work on the bitchumen, but when I did venture down a fire-trail I would have just that extra bit of grip.

I think as long as you stick with the well known brands, get a price you're happy with ... you can't go wrong.

Another vote for Pirelli ATR, remarkably silent on bitumen.

2015 D4 probably the most amazing yet, why get a RR?

I put a set of Michelin LTX A/T2 (245x75x16) on my Disco and am very happy with them.

They are extremely smooth and silent on the black top; balanced up very well. They also give plenty of grip in the wet. I've had them on a few fire trails and tracks and was quite happy with them. I haven't had them on sand though.

    Cheers,
    Jack

I have had XPC's on both disco's; Pirelli AT's on both discos (one passenger rated, the other LT); Sime AT's on the D1; and now Maxxis AT 751 Bravo on my D2 for the last 40,000k odd - in LT...the Maxxis are the best so far and excel at towing without squirm. They remind me of the XPC but better - ie far more capable than the tread pattern suggests.

    Cheers
