i have had an arb air locker in the rear [v8 d1] for a while now, it was great, then one day i fitted much bigger tyres than standard, within about three feet of a steep climb i managed to break both rear axles- gentle throttle on an auto, so no thrashing at all.
i fitted hytuff rear axles and all good again.
then i won a detroit soft locker on ebay.
i put it in the rear and moved the arb air locker to the front.
in all the drives since, i have not used the front air locker.
with the detriot in the rear, it just goes without hassles, i have no bad manners on the road, infact i really cannot notice the detroit in the rear in normal highway driving.
i am sure one of my mates will attack me for saying this, as i truly believed the detroit to be crap from riding in his car.
the detroit in my disco is the best modification i have done.
i now want to put detroits in my other disco [front and rear] it's just that good.
As rovercare pointed out its a testicle thing. If i was on a touring trip or by myself in that scenario i would use them straight up. What i was talking about is when we're out having a play on the weekend. I like to drive lines open to see if you can do it without the lockers. Its much more satisfying driving a hard line and doing it full open. The CDL goes in as soon as i pull off the bitumen so i guess that doesnt make it fully open. Obviously im not worried about wearing the lockers out, and i have the luxury of being confident in the drivetrain now. Besides recoveries are half the fun of going driving!
Thanks for all the input.
I would really like to try out the TrueTrack in the rear, but I think I'll go with the ARB locker instead.
That way I can kill three birds with one stone by installing a good compressor and air tank to use for the locker, pumping up the tyres, and emergency air for the SLS.
Now to work out where to mount all this stuff.
