D2 split fold seats (x2) in cargo area forward facing??

If I have understood your post.... you are suggesting to have a rear seat sideways facing? If so, unfortunately it's not something I can have legally with current legislation, all the seats need to be strapped in with them sitting forward.

Or...

are you suggesting to have a standard rear seat some other way? When you mention standard rear seat, is that the ones that fold up into the pannier space?

Could you please clarify...

The standard rear seats, if you do not have the rear air con option fold up into the space of the storage bins. If you have the rear air con as I do, the passenger side seat sits 6 inches or so closer to the centre of the vehicle.

With the seperate factory third row seats you can use just one if that suits, but have the car registered as a 7 seater with all the relevant seat belts installed etc. even if you leave one of the seats out (temporarily if your asked).

One thing I did notice however, is passenger in the third row get a bit of motion sickness, especially when offroad due to sitting behind the rear axle and having a greater range of vertical motion.

I did a run up the beach with only the passenger side seats on row 2 & 3 up to fit the kids kayaks in the disco and was almost cleaning up my 9 year olds breakfast from the third row.

Either way I would think it is cheaper and easier to go standard LR seats and belts.

If you have a Disco2 (99-04) then the factory 3rd row seats are forward facing. The sideways seats you are talking about are in the older Disco1.

However I didn't think there were harness points in the 3rd row. Someone who owns one would need to clarify that before you spend any money.

I did exactly what your are looking to do - family got bigger and we needed more seats for the Disco.
I purchased a set Disco 3rd row seats, complete with all trim panels, grab handles, bolts, fittings and seat belts from Bundalene (Forum member from Sydney). Probably worth getting in contact with him as he does have these from time to time.

Installation is not a problem as the 5 seater discos have all the correct mounting points for the seats already installed (the RAVE cd is great for providing all this info).

The only snag I encountered was that the lower seatbelt points were not drilled and tapped, and the tap size was not readily available. All up it took about 5 hours to install the seats.
As a bonus, I sold the rear cargo paniers which helped offset the cost of the seats.

As for the legal part, I was living in QLD too, it cost $130 for a vehicle inspector to check the installation and provide a dataplate and paperwork (all easy as it is all original LR parts with matching trim!). Qld transport updated their system with the details for no charge (I was surprised) and we informed our insurance company with the details too - all in all it was a simple smooth process.

All up it cost us about $1000 for the seats, $130 for Dataplate, 7 hours of time, and we got about $250 back for the paniers...

You will not need to change any suspension, as some people suggest - it is not required.

Most of the time we had one seat folded up, and used just the one seat with
the additional space for shopping, pram etc.:)

Just had a look at what came out of my D2 and their are no child harness points in the third row, but you will have 3 securing points for the second row.

You can however use a booster seat in the third row if the child only requires a seat belt and not a ful harness.

I believe there are 2 child restraints points for the 3rd row on the structure above the rear door. (Going from memory here - I could be wrong!)

I just had a look to check my thoughts.

There are no child restraint mounting points for the 3rd row seats. Whether they could be engineered, is another question. Be aware that you MAY also need to fit the flip down head-rests to comply with the regs.

As for fitting a pusher in there - good luck with that. You MIGHT fit a fold up stroller, but nothing the size of a full size pram.

Another option is for the eldest child to sit in the rear most seat, leaving the other one folded up. IIRC, you can get a harness that clips into a normal seat-belt, but does not require a seperate mounting point.

Best bet would be to contact the RACQ and speak to thier technical dept and see what suggestions they can come up with.

We have two seats for our eldest - the one in hubbys FJ40 uses a H harness/seatbelt combination and the one in the landrover uses an inbuilt harness needing the anchor point.

Out of curiosity - has anyone ever taken the back of the trim off the double seat in the middle row? There is an anchor point in the double seat (middle row) closest the door but no anchor point for the seat next to it (in the double seat -middle row)... presumably because the anchor point for the double seat in the middle row would use the anchor point located at the top of the boot door.

How easy/hard would it be to drill/fit/weld (or whatever may be required) the thread part into the frame of the double seat in the 2nd row and use the anchor point at the top of the rear door for the 3rd row seat?? Can you even use the anchor point above the rear door for a third row seat?

Otherwise, I wonder if the seat frame of the 3rd row seat would be the same as the frame for the 2nd row seat (single) and could accommodate the drilling and fitting/welding of an anchor bolt into that (gosh - hope I make sense!!)

If the anchor point is something that can be welded into the 3rd row seat like the back of one of the middle row seats that would work and would save the cost of needing to buy another seat and harness.

I was in contact with Bundalene not too long ago and nothing on the books there, i've also spoken with a few LR wreckers around Melbourne and so far they have not bothered calling me back (at the time they needed to check)!! ...

I also reside in Melbourne so laws will be different again...

i'd be interested to hear about the anchor point scenarios mentioned above OR - how's this for a thought .... what about drilling into the cargo floor just behind the 3rd row seat and putting the anchor bolt into there?? (obviously this would need to be sealed up properly and the like) what do you think?...

if I can get what I need for around the 1K mark i'd be very happy indeed!

JBM770 - i'd be looking to do exactly what you have done there but ... 1. do you have to remove the pannier as the seat would not be folded in any hurry and would be more a permanent fixture? 2. How much boot space is left to the side of the seat - that is - how wide is the space?

The 3rd seats I have were fitted by a Qld based company,can't remember the name but will look in the morning. They have an office/w"shop in Sydney so might do in Melb as well.

A company also in Syd called Littles specialises in child restraints and makes specialty fittings for baby seats for utes etc where there is no space behind the seats, might be something to look at. (Littles Child Restraints)
