    Air filters, snorkels and D2s

    Greetings all

I'm a "guest" here from the Defender/General section but I'm asking a question for a mate who has a D2 (TD5) that he uses as his camping vehicle.

On a trip up north of WA he did his usual half way check of bits at Kunnunurra and was horrified to empty out half a shoe box of dust out of the air filter and box. It was his first dusty trip and did not realise he needed to do this more often in dusty conditions. It seems that the position of the aircleaner intake is not ideal for dusty conditions, I think I've read this before.

Is there a well known fix for this apart from a snorkel? I'm aware generally opinions vary over the desirablility of a snorkel with another top filter rather than the Safari snorkel style that is just an intake extension, but in the case of a D2 TD5 owners specifically is there a consensus?

I'll have a look through search but thought I'd ask.

    TIA

I have never had any dust issues with our D2, having travelled on thousands of kms of dirt roads. I normally check the filter and give it a clean - tap it to remove dust / grit every couple of hard days driving. I have never had dust in the bottom of the filter box like you are mentioning.

Sometimes when a bull bar is fitted the inner guard plastic protection is removed, exposing the air intake to far more dust / debris. I covered these as shown in the pic below. (passengers side is similar)

Thanks for that Eric. He did have a bullbar installed recently before the trip and you might be onto something.

    pre cleaner

    James,
I run a Donaldson pre cleaner on top of a Safari snorkel, the pre cleaner removes heaps of dust with no loss of performance

Out of interest Erich, why did you not simply "cutdown" the factory plastic liners as they are already lined up with the fittings and the hole that is pre-drilled on the edge of the bull bar.

To be honest I can't remember - it was about 8 years ago. I don't think I could make the liner fit properly.

Having said that, I have seen quite a few D2's without any plastic liners, especially under the washer bottle on the passenger side.

    Mine is one of those.

I've still got the original plastic liners in the shed, but have also found it very difficult to re-fit them since having the bullbar fitted. I guess the brand / style of bar will have some impact on that - mine's an ECB.

However, there was a Safari snorkel on mine when I bought it - and I have never had any issue with dust in the filter box - and I do get out on dusty roads a bit.

I like the mod that you've made to yours Erich - might have a look at something similar myself, if only to protect the washer bottle. I've got some spare aluminium checker plate in the shed.
    Cheers .........

I did something similar to Bundalene, but used some heavy duty rubber instead, but I get alot of dust in the air box though, so something more rigid may be the go.
