Sounds very likely, had similar issues...thermostat stuck open.
Better than stuck closed though!

I have the same problem,
Did you also have low pressure in the system?

Well I replaced my thermostat just over a week ago, and it cured my issue of low running temps.
Now the disco gets up to temp an hovers between 78-89 deg.
But what a ***** of a job it was to replace.
I'm certain there was no pressure problems. The system never leaked before or after the thermostat change.

I had the same lo-temp reading problem when I bought mine and all I did was clean the electric plug at the top of the radiator and sprayed some water dispersant in there which cured it. The problem has re-occurred lately after jet washing the engine, chasing an oil leak so looks like I'll have to do it again.

Update: just started to experience low running temps again 55-66 deg.
Now this had me stumped. Why? Well it appears either the temp gauge is dodgy or the the connection is.
After work I removed the engine cover and disconnected the temp plug, Couldn't see anything wrong with the connection. So I plugged it back on, restarted the disco and my temp was back to reading 78deg let run while keeping the revs @ 3000 and the temp climbed to 88deg. So it appears the there is a faulty connection. looks like I'll be ordering a new sender soon.
Suspose I better test the old thermo, probably nothing wrong with it.
Oh well I de egr'd, replaced the turbo hoses and installed a new PAS pump at the same time.
