An update on mine.
Went from Sydney to Coffs Harbour last week. 550km for 85 litres (15.5l/100km). Sat on 105-110 in 100km/h zones and 115-119 in 110km/h zones. 235/70 16's and no heavy accessories fuel was BP 92 octane.

My '02 V8 gets anywhere between 500 - 580 mixed on that E10 rubbish. I have to say though that since I had the extractors, new cats and exhaust system fitted, the economy is great and much nicer to drive in town and on the highway. Better spread of torque and V8 burble to listen to. I get a few more kms on 95 whenever its available.
My 02 V8 has averaged 16.5l/100 for the last 50,000kms.
Best was just over 13l/100 to and from Phillip Island.
Worst was 22l/100 pulling a 1t camper trailer mix of highway, dirt roads and loose sand.
Would be great to read about improvements people have made that has made a noticable difference to fuel consumption.

April 04 2a V8 S owned since March 2010 has been quite good looking at all of your figures below, had 79,374km on the clock one owner from new & I've done 7812 km @ 16.876 Litres Per 100 km or 17.61 MPG. Changed to BP 98 recently as it was "pinging" and it was suggested (by some knowledgeable LR people) that it was the coil packs, problem solved, runs like a dream now. As a few have said also, didn't buy it for the economy just the V8 rumble & its ability. Off to Exmouth/Coral Bay over Xmas so will get some good road and I would imagine sand (won't forget the blast furnace PPE) figures, keep you posted.

suggest you take a look at the exhaust to manifold gaskets also. If the 6 stud / nuts (or some there of) are loose, then the sound of "pinking" is very likely.
Best if you have a set of ramps at least to get the long bar and socket up the right hand side from underneath, but doable.
I can vouch for what fishguts is talking about with pinging. It's a totally separate noise to what the manifold gasket ticking is. Mine too had some pinging under load while running on 91 octane, nothing major but I notice these things and they get on my tits. So I filled up with 98 and it's running so much more smoothly now with no pinging at all.
I have no idea if 98 will deliver any improvement on economy (I'll let you know when this tank is through) but I think I'll keep using it regardless due to how much smoother it makes the engine.
Its interesting that the manual indicates minimum of 95 ron but in the same sentence says that it has been tuned to run on 91 ron in the country it is shipped to. It also said that a small amount of "engine knock" is acceptable, right... As you indicated Sully the difference is really noticeable as the ping is completely gone and was only present under acceleration of any degree. I'm not going to change back to anything less than 95. Not sure whether the economy has improved forgot to notate the fuel log spreadsheet when I changed but it is really running great. The best I've got to date is 13.74 l/100 or 20.55 MPG on a trip down to Margaret River last month. Lovin' my new toy.

......Wrong....particularly as you have a Bosh ECU setup that utilises a knock sensor within the ignition timing side of your ECU.
If you had pulled out a spark plug or two before your mechanic had told you your coil packs were stuffed then maybe you would have seen tiny metalic looking / speckle like looking (I know hard to describe) sitting on the white/tan coloured insulator part of the plug. They are tiny weeny bits of your piston metling due to detonation / pinging / knock.
You won't see them on mine, not with all the black soot on them....!!! :D :D :cool:

Now if only I could get the same economy out of the second half of the tank as the first. First half always gets 300km;)
