Rusty?
Aside from the exhaust manifold itself, are the pipes not all stainless?
Happy to stand corrected as always and probably most likely![]()
Hi all, I hope this Monday sees you well.
So the D2 has that lovely ticking noise while hot and under load.
These two symptoms lead me to believe that there is a problem anywhere from the exhaust manifold gasket, the flange pre cats, the cats themselves or even the Y pipe.
Sound like I'm on the right track?
I was crawling under the car yesterday and noticed that it was pretty rusted at all joins from the manifold all the way past the centre muffler. I'm thinking that I might just go to a local exhaust shop and get all of the bits replaced that need to be replaced instead of trying to source all of the parts myself.
I'll keep you posted.
Cheers,
Chris

Looks to me to be all mild steel? Like you, I'm happy to be corrected. The joins are all rusted together from the cat back and surface rust has started appearing on the centre muffler and pipes.
Hi Chris. Is yours the V8?
Mine quite often gets the tick tick noise. Mine eminates from the downpipe clamp, from the manifold. Three bolts hold the flange plates together, and it only appears (on mine anyway) that the bolts on the drivers side come a little loose every now and again, and the ticks start. I get under the car and tighten these up, and hey presto, the tickings gone!
Hope that helps a little...
Cheers,

My old d2 cracked the pipes under the flange to the bottom of the manifold quite regulary, especially when i took it to medowie in the large muddy ruts draging the exhaust alot, we had these both welded up several times on both sides and being done by dodgy exhaust places they used mild steel wire to weld them so they looked pretty rusty.
Your best bet would be to try and find some after market headers that will fit it and put those on, while your at delete one of the muffler boxes and throw in some highflow cats, that should give you a nice sound then too![]()

Depending where you live in Melbourne, I can recommend Performance Exhausts in Ringwood.
I recently discovered cracks in my y-piece and around the flange of the front muffler.
Got them to replace it all (from the cats back) including a new y-piece, free flow turbo muffler at the front, kept the over diff pipe as it was OK and is stainless, stainless hot dog at the back ,all through 2.5 inch stainless pipe. Never have to worry about corrosion any more and it actually sounds like a V8 should now, not too loud at idle, sweet at 2-2500 revs (great in the bush) and can't hear it in the car cruising at 100.
Cost $600 and 2 hours of my time.
Sully,
See AussieAub's post closely, I reckon he's hit the nail. My manifold to exhaust flanges (3 x M8 nuts per flange) regularly loosened themselves and began a farty tick noise. I ended up replacing them for some new flanged nuts I found at Supercheap. Since then no more problems.![]()
Yes change the centre muffler for something like a magnaflow straight through, I a fan of the magna mufflers, they just have a nice sound. With mine i never got around to doing the headers and cats but it was on the list.
heres a little clip of how it sounded, its not the best but its one of the only ones i can find. It was 3in from the Y join with a single straight through magnaflow muffler and no reasonator, it was pretty loud but in the cab it was still quiet and sounded sweet as, if you went with a similar setup and it was to loud you could always add a reasonator later to quieten it down.
