Many thanks Blknight.aus for the practical tips. I will buy the 3/8" tools you suggest.

After removing engine 3 times in a month it becomes old hand, then when you old man buys the wrong starter well...

Wow Clubagreenie - three times in a month! On the fourth go, I could well imagine you being able to do it in the dark! You could travel around Australia undaunted by the prospect of a mechanical failure.

BHG, BHG, Replacement (4.6 now )

Then auto out for rebuild... which it would seem to actually be the MAF. It never ends, but then if we didn't want to keep busy we'd buy nisotas and kid ourselves they didn't break too.

I agree with you Clubagreenie. Although there can be some frustrating and painful moments, it is still a very satisfying experience working on one's Land Rovers. I am often amazed at the heated bias of Nissan and Toyota owners towards Land Rovers and British engineering. I am also surprised at the ignorance of greenies who would banish 4X4s and yet do not realise that the making of their hybrid cars produces the same amount of emissions as running a V8 for twenty years! We do need to respect the creation that God has given us to steward, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy exploring and delighting in it whilst driving in a V8 Land Rover.

By the way, you mentioned the MAF. My Bearmach Hawkeye engine diagnostic tool is showing a P0171 fuelling adaption fault on bank one. Do you know if this is related to the MAF sensor?

If you dont have it, i posted the Hawkeye manual in the files section. Just search under "Hawkeye"

Think theres a list of codes in there somewhere. If not, there is a list of what they relate to somewhere in the files section.

    Cheers

    Andrew

I have the same, plus the L/R bank lean faults. If you can get hold of a scan gauge and take it for a drive, watch the load/loop condition. If under load it switches to open lop mode in the ECU and it looses power that's what I have at the moment. Seems to stem from the BHG dumping water to oil and then the emulsion overflowing the rockers into the breathers and running into the MAF and killing it.

But (if anyone's listening in Sydney) I need to borrow a known working MAF to confirm. But everything I can see and read points to it.

Basically MAF senses no flow so leans out, then the O2 sensors read excess O2 so enriches again. That's what causes the surge. Feels exactly like a slipping auto and I believe the fault locks out 4th in the box so when it tries to shift into 4 it just unlocks the drive and gets a boot full of revs.

LOVEMYRANGIE, I have been unable to locate the Hawkeye manual you posted in the files section. I have tried searching several times for the files section without success. How do I access the Hawkeye file?

Thanks Clubagreenie, you have such a good working knowledge of your Discovery - its as though it's an extension of you. I have still much to learn: what does BHG stand for?
