Starter motor removal V8 Discovery II 1999

To remove the starter motor from the V8 engine, the workshop manual says to release the front exhaust pipe from the exhaust flange in order to remove the bolt securing the heat shield to the engine mounting bracket. Is this necessary? If so, is it also necessary to release the front exhaust pipe on the other side of the engine to enable the exhaust system to drop low enough to access the heat shield bolt and remove the shield from the engine?

Not too sure if this is necessary, but even if you were to remove the exhaust from the manifolds it won't drop down too much unless you remove the cross member from underneath the car. This cross member will support the cat section and Y pipe as soon as it's dropped.

I reckon the best way to find out would be to get stuck into it and pull bits out as required.

I've certainly done it without. On the side of a suburban street, just watch the nut on the power cable. If the bolt turns inside the starter you will have to drop everything to lower it far enough to get it apart or cut the cable back.

If you do need to drop the crossmember to allow for some more movement in the exhaust system, also undo the rubber mounts along the length of the exhaust, I replaced the gaskets b/w the manifold & start of pipework today & makes job alot easier.
Exhaust can't fall too far )

You can remove the starter motor without removing anything else. It is difficult but can be done, make sure the battery is disconnected. You'll also need a long 8mm allen driver on a 1/2" drive. The heat sheild is a tough one, but with a bit of patience can be removed and put back with minimal fuss. I've done it twice in the last couple of years all from lying on my back under the truck.

    Good luck

Thanks clubagreenie for the caution about the power cable bolt. It is good to know that you were able to do a curb-side removal job. I hope you had some skin left on your knuckles!

Thanks Discobaker for the tip about the rubber mounts. I will order exhaust pipe to flange gaskets to have on hand.

George, I am greatly encouraged by your response as I will also need to do the job on my back. I have a 8mm 1/2" SD allen driver on hand, and also know what it's like to persevere little by little when working on machinery in break-down or less than ideal situations.

your best bet is a long set of 3/8th inch extensions with either wobble drive Or a Universal bit between them.

you can do it without removing any of the exhaust BUT

DISCONNECT THE EARTH LEADS FROM ALL BATTERIES FIRST.
