    Running in rearWD only Qs

    Hi All
Having chanced my D2a propshaft for 120ks its finally coming out in the next few days for a precautionary rebuild. If I run around in CDL/ rear wheel drive to stay mobile for a few days is there anything I should know. Obviously drive gently, but can I expect unusual clunks or backlash or potential for damage. Any locked CDL issues on the tarmac in rwd?
Or should I not do it at all except for emergencies.
    Cheers

Did the same when getting my front shaft exchanged. Vehicle drove fine, just don't put you're foot into it with the rear drive shaft's "strong" rubber donut.

I'm not advocating it, but after killing diffs I've driven '79 and '88 Rangies long distances in both Front WD and RWD with the centre diff locked. This was with halfshafts and propshafts removed on the damaged axle.

In RWD it was hard to tell the difference; steering was a bit off due to no drive & toe-out. With Front WD only the whole thing gets a bit squirrely but manageable.

For short term use I think your issue will be legislative rather than technical...

... & if you every remove the rear propshaft, remember to put the nuts back on the transfer box end because they hold the handbrake drum on... It's "ouch" when that comes off at speed.

    Yours,

    Andy

I've had to drive in FWD twice when the rear donut couplings gave out, the last time being from Birdsville to Sydney. No issues if you take it easy and smooth except that there is wicked backlash - you have to take your foot off the accelerator slowly. Well at least there was in a manual. An auto might be different.

Thanks All. Front shaft now out & running fine in rwd, can't really tell the difference except for a slight clunk when you lift off. Rebuilt shaft will go back in next 2 or 3 days. Bonus--that tfr. case whine I thought I had has gone..mmmmmm? The double joint on the shaft didn't seem too bad but maybe it was causing a warning whine. Soon know when the rebuilt shaft goes back in.

You cannot do this in a D2, remove the shaft yes, but DO NOT remove the axles if you do a diff and need to drive home.

There is no problem with the front shaft removed, you will notice a slight handling difference, especially when cornering, but it will be fine.
