I have an occasional 'rattle' or 'sounds like a something spinning on a loose bearing' type sound eminating from the front of the engine. Only hear it when engine well up to temp. I cannot identify anything obvious with the range of pulleys there, but have not yet removed the belt to check. I do however notice a small amount of play if I grip the fan and wiggle it front to back. Its not the blades bending or the pulley, but from the viscous coupling.
So, should there be ANY movement in this fan at all?
cheers
Nick
It's not a badly out of balance centrifugal oil filter ?

I can hear the filter spinning down after engine stop, and sounds nrmal. Thanks beeutey. I now have the fan off, and noise still comes. Did notice a significant increase in same noise when AC turned on......
the search continues.
Make sure you check your belt tensioner pulley, mine made a noise you could only hear when the window was down, or if the car was coming towards you, and when it seized up it had melted the bearing and pulley together so the car couldnt crank over..
May not be it but check it while you are there, also while you are at it check your harmonic balancer as well..
Cheers Ean
Can Holden V6 belt and/or pulleys be used on my D2 V8?
When mine "melted" it broke the rubber in the harmonic
Mine recently developed a chirp(like a bird)bearing spining sound.
The fan bearing was spining in the timing case(blades moved @20mm at tips) .
Happened while away but got the housing drilled and 2 grub screws fitted to hold the outer bearing shell.
All good now
If yours has ACE I think there is only 2 bearings, tensioner and fan, if changing one- pays to do the other.
My non ACE has an iddler where the ACE pump belongs(different length belt too).
