Did this last week on my 99 D2.
picked up a single din kenwood cd player with Aux output on the front for ipod was easy to install as it's only a single din slot but sits recessed in a bit .
Changed the 4 speakers in the car with kenwood 6inch splits with crossover in the front and kenwood 6 inch in the rear doors.
all up cost 399$ :)

Hi John, just put a jvc headunit in my Disco last weekend.
It was a KDR- 816 ($400) it has Ipod/Iphone connectivity for both charging and playing (even works with Iphone 4!) It has built in bluetooth handsfree with an external mic that you just run inside the A pillar and clip up near the sun visor, has a front AUX and USB input as well as an old school CD player.
YOU CAN EVEN CHANGE THE LIGHTS ON THE THING TO WHATEVER COLOUR YOU WANT- LAND ROVER GREEN!
You CAN keep the steering wheel controls easily with a PAC - SWI Jack.
Search on ebay get one from the USA while the dollars good - I did, cost me $60 delivered instead of $110.
I have no hesitation recommending this setup - it FITS PERFECTLY, was easy to install (did it myself) and has everything i need from a Headunit and sounds great.
P.S. Supercheap have 25% off car sound including JVC for the next couple of days.

JVC have the KDR-716 which has all the features of the 816 but without some fancy audio processor bizzo. It's on sale for $260 at supercheap.
i bought the jvc unit today as the price was very good so i have removed my head unit to see if im up to the challenge :eek:

i have fount the steering control kits on ebay pac -swi that mattyg suggested so ill organise one of these :)
and im guessing i need to change ariel plugs :confused: dick smiths maybe :confused:
should i be pulling the dash apart to fit the new one too :confused: or can i slide it into the existing hole :eek:

Antenna plugs are universal so except that yours looks damaged in the last pics (unless it swivels or is pre-bent).You cant just fit a new end either the inner wire is very fine and I've never been able to solder one.
No matter what head unit you have they are all single DIN std (same as your existing) so any other single din will fit. You just have to replace the matal sleeve that the radio fits into. Instructions will show how to make it stay there, but it usually involves bending some tabs of metal out behind the panel. You'll probably need to do the opposite to remove the old sleeve.
Does anyone have a line on the adaptors to go between your existing wiring and new units and also how to ID your LR unit to work out what to buy?
There are a number of variations to the theme for aerial plugs, however, there are also as many adapters available. Once the head unit is out, take it to your audio place and get the required adapter.
If you do a search for :harness adapters" you may well find and ISO to landrover adapter that allows you to hook up the head unit to the adapter by matching colours, and then pluging the other end directly into your factory harness

All Discovery 1 and 2 are ISO harnessed. If you pull the stereo unit wires out a little further you will find another set of plugs. This is the ISO plug set. For what ever brand of head unit you buy, providing it is a 'name' brand, you should be able to by an Aerpro adaptor for the unit to ISO. There is no need to cut any wires.
Alternativley, for wiring, get a volt meter, a standard c size battery and two pieces of wire.
Use the volt meter with the neg in a solid metal body contact, test each terminal with the ignition off to find 12v+ permanent. Then switch ignition on and test for 12v+ switch. This will obviously show on/off with the key on/off. The speaker wires you will find by taping the two pieces of wire you have, one to each end of the battery, and crossing any two wires in the plug (except those you have already identified), and listening for 'pop' in a speaker. If you find the + and - for one speaker you will hear it pop as the battery voltage causes it to move slightly. By the time you have eliminated all of this, there should be not much left.
As stated above if you are keeping the steering wheel controls, then the adaptor will be necessary, possibly with the ISO plug aswell.
