What is wrong with using O.A.T. coolant?

I've run the OAT in mine since I bought it. Had OAT in it from new as far as I can tell - I used Nulon OAT for a while and lately Cat ELC from Westrac.

Have never had any sign of a leak or any issues with the cooling system (touch wood) other than one of the electrodes for the engine saver dropping out of the tank on the way down to Kambalda one day (the day after it was fitted) and spraying coolant all over the engine bay. Fixed with a bit of gaffa tape on the side of the road, and then fixed properly when I got home.

It goes to 114 (at least it did on mine) before moving. At 115 it was half a needle width above its normal position, which would not have been noticable had I not been staring at the Scan Gauge.

I use demineralised water and Redline Water Wetter which runs cooler, eliminates hot spots in the heads, lubricates the water pump and inhibits corrosion.

Glycol does prevent freezing (not an issue where I live) and raises the boiling point which in a LR you should not really be approaching anyway and your cooling system is up to the mark.

There's a couple of new synthetic additives around which are getting good reviews in the States - Neo Keep Cool is one, Valvoline Zerex Racing Super Coolant is another. Not sure if they're available in Oz yet but Redline's easily obtainable.

just a bit of follow up.

The OAT coolant when mixed with demineralized water is protective of cooling systems with aluminium in them.

As I understand there is aluminium in the radiator of a TD5.

How much more aluminium is in the motor that needs protection?
Maybe that's the reason why OAT is recomended for TD5's.

Nothing. the OEM specifies OAT for a reason.

people who claim that the ethyl glycol is better because their engine leaks less when using that in place of OAT have lazy mechanics.

The inexperienced need to start listening to those who know rather than the "awww I reckon..." and " a mate of mine once..." backyard spanner twister mechanics.
The roof of your house has walls under it for a specific reason, OAT is in your cooling system for a reason. The common factor in both is SO THEY DONT FALL DOWN!!!!

Traco, explain why raising the boiling point is a bad thing and shouldn't be done...????
why not also leave your radiator cap off while your at it, that raises the boiling point too..... for a very specific reason.....

Actually leaving the radiator cap off lowers the boiling point in comparison to leaving it on (higher pressure = higher boiling point).

Higher pressures with regards to water in the radiator etc is a good thing as long as it's not too high it blows the gaskets apart.
