Recently replaced my fuel pump and I could be wrong, but think you'll find that because of the way the fuel pump sits hard on the floor of the fuel tank the swing of the float remains the same. All that changes with the long range tank is that there is space for fuel above the level of the pump, which is why it registers as full for longer? I think if you bent the float bar straighter, would be more accurate around empty, but stay registered as full for longer?

My D2 V8 auto with 135l Long range tank registers full until around 130kms has been driven, then goes down quite quickly to just under half full around 300kms, then slows right down until empty at about 550kms. Theoretically have enough fuel for around 700kms.

I found when the pump and level indicator was not installed correctly by one workshop the float was hitting one of the baffles. Had another workshop look at it and they realigned it facing fully to the back of the D2 and it works a peach now. I have the LongRanger tanks.

An aftermarket LR tank should need no mods to any of the standard items like gauges or pumps etc.
All a LR tank does is keep the gauge at the full mark longer. Obviously you need to do your own calibration once the gauge starts to move, but generally if you re-fill once the gauge is reading, you will know how much is left, multiplied by your economy (l/100) and you will know your range.

I have the Browne Davis 145l plus the 50l saddle tank offering 200kts. The gauge doesn't register until 450K, and the light comes on with about 50k range left...just as it should.

I am a bit confused, I have a standard tank and experience the same results - empty at 550km.
Are you saying, that after the gauge shows empty you can still get another 150km?

This is the modification to fix the fuel guages.

The float mounts to the pump body and the pump body always sits on the bottom of the tank. This maintains the same empty point and raises the height of the float for a full tank. Mine reads the same with the longrange tank as what it did with a standard tank. The arm can be moved from pump to pump.
