yes it can, as thats exactly what starting with the CDL engaged does on an early D2 with a retro fitted CDL. The ABS and HDC lights are still on but BOTH of those systems retain some functionality, its is only the TC that is 100% disabled.

Fitting a simple switch into the blue wire (you normally cut) on the SLABS ECU will give the driver the ability to turn the TC off.

This is one of the reasons I have not updated my SLABS unit to the later versions as you dont have that option with those.

Going to have to check that, cause from memory my HDC didn't work when I restarted the car with the CDL engaged.

A side note to this is, if you engage your CDL and it engages without the light on the dash on, if you turn the ignition off and then restart the car, the TC/HDC & ABS lights dont come on or disable:eek:

Hi Baz,

If your referring to my vehicle specifically (above), then mine does not care whether the CDL is in or out engine started or not, it never throws the lights as I cut the feed to the SLABS.

My post ref disabling TC was just saying it could be done, I have not done it yet as I dont drive sand that often and thats where "I read" it seems to be an issue, for every other surface and so far what I do with mine, having both the TC and CDL is the better option, will be throwing an ARB in the rear very shortly, so the TC will be even more redundant except across the front axle.

Mine does.

if you are in the sand dunes with tc on you will have troubles. i have taken at least 10 d2 owners to a dune system down south here and the first they do when the get back is get a cdl and turn tc off. i have never seen a d2 with the tc make it though with out help. turn tc off and its like the hill is not that. Ask peter(aka ferret he had to be towed by an f250).

No, just something I discovered by accident, accidently turned the motor off and when I restarted it, I assumed I would get the 3 lights, but I didn't, the light didn't come on because the switch was faulty.

I have a Maxi Drive in the rear, been thinking of a TrueTrac, but don't know if we will have the vehicle in the next 12mths.

It's funny but I never really took that much notice whether the ABS still worked, I'm pretty sure though the missus complained that the HDC wasn't working on one occasion when we had the lights on after turning the car off when the CDL was engaged.

I'll try it out while I'm away over the Xmas break.

Indeed! This was a training course organised by the LR Club, and when the trainer pitched up in a brand new D4, all of us in the Pumas and D2s laughed at him. The D4 has standard 19" road tyres on whereas all of us had 16" BFG ATs.

We deflated to 1.0 bar, the D4 to 1.2. We stopped laughing by the first dune we tackled, and by the last dune (the most hectic one), we were all red in the face - the only vehicle that could get up that massive dune was the D4.

The sand was soft-ish, but probably not as soft as North African desert sand. This playground is just outside of Cape Town, and it had been raining the previous weekend, so not as soft as in summer.

What you have to note about these vids, is that except for the D4, all the other vehicles were being driven by n00bs, including housewives who had never driven off-road!

Interesting. I have seen the top posted one before. I think the big difference between that and what I do with my D2 is that the sand there is not deep and its pretty hard. I am talking sand so soft even the *much* lighted D2 is dropping in and scraping hard against the Diff and axles...I have no doubt on harder sand the D4's sheer grunt up dunes with sand that is not too soft would be better than the D2 etc, but in really deep soft stuff I would opt for the D2. For eg there was a member here with a D3 who went to the Cape and tried a very deep soft beach (we are talking 1.5-2 foot deep super soft stuff like we get on some beach cuttings in Queensland - the Islands) and his D3 was really hopeless and it was the same beach and same conditions he said where his D2 had no issues at all. Mate to be honest there is no way sheer grunt can overcome flotation problems in DEEP soft sand. Grunt sure helps, but if the vehicle just cannot get up over the hump its low profile relatively wide tyres that cant be deflated well longitudinally to overcome it will struggle terribly. I tow up to 2 tonn in deep sand, including cuttings and the vehicles that do best are easily the D2's and similar that are about 2 tonn and have good rubber (high profile and not too wide) aired down to 20 or less.

I have towed 2 tonns many times uphill through cuttings with 15 pounds a corner and eaten up extremely soft stuff and the only reason I got through, apart from gearing and driving experience, was the long snow shoe type shape of the tyres as aired down. I am not running down the D4 by any means, but horses for courses. There are some blokes on the D3/4 board who have good experience with the D3/D4 in sand, but I have also heard from some to the contrary. Its always interesting getting different perspectives. The problem I have, if I ever looked to go more modern, is that short of finding someone who has towed heavy through Fraser or Stradbroke after a month of no rain and heavy traffic I just couldnt be confident that I wasnt in for a world of pain. Being able to stop mid cutting in very deep soft sand towing 2 tonns and then back up 2 feet and move forward again and getting out is a very sweet thing.
