Wouldn't a solid mass flywheel cause more vibrations?
Yes - in theory, but so far its not really anyworse than with the dmf that I can tell. (maybe very slightly noticeable at idle)
I have never changed a clutch on a vehicle that uses a dual mass flywheel. Normally i would get the flywheel re-faced. Can this be done to a dual mass flywheel?
It can and it can't, some places refuse to do them, the ones that do are hard to find and are reluctant to do them.
It very likely the flywheel will be OK, mine was fine when I had my clutch done in 08, OEM replacement clutch kit for the D2 is around $450, genuine is around $700, that's clutch only, the Land Rover genuine flywheel is around $800 if you look around, I can't imagine how much they are from a dealer, as I never asked, but I would imagine it would be more that $800.
Baz.
I think getting them skimmed is a pointess exercise in most cases, especially if they have got hot.
The problem on mine wasn't the face of the flywheel, but the fact the springs had gone loose, meaning there was a fair bit of free play between the 2 halves.
I also read somewhere but cant find it now that 1 specialist in the UK found that 9 out of 10 flywheels has to be changed when doing clutch replacements on td5's
Thanks fellas. Very helpful . The D2 has just clicked over 140000 so chances are i will need a new flywheel by the sounds .
Although after bleeding it it seems to be feeling heaps better . There was a heap of air in it but the fluid wasn't down at all. Any one else had this happen?
