    Had a D2.
Don't tell the kids yet - but we lost her to a botched creek crossing. Water in the ECU & transmission controller (& other places). Insurance company didn't even get quotes. Instant write off. Really REALLY sad about this. Lesson learned. Never trust someone else's judgment over your own. We had local "help" at the crossing. My own fault at the end of the day. shoulda stayed put. was quite happy to even. Bright side, no one got hurt, drowned, or otherwise and the dogs slept through it all. Including 2 tow truck trips.

    RIP Canyonero I

WTF....youch......yep....hard lesson to learn. Bloody hell how deep was the creek? You'll have to get another Disco....I won't let True and Ash sit in any jap crap . At least it was insured for going off road. One of the benefits of being in the club is you are with people you trust...even then if I don't feel comfortable...I won't do it.

There's some nice 99-00 models around...good luck with it,

    Regards

Too deep! A few inches below windows.

Lol! Rest assured it won't be a Kia Carnival!

I was really missing some Disco Owner input. If I can find another D2 I'm coming out on some club trips to learn the stuff I don't know! Wading prep for example! Never thought I'd bother doing it!

Thanks! Keep your eye's peeled and your ear to the ground for me. Looking to buy in Jan - got more time to look then, but if something comes up...

    Cheers

Yep...wading prep is paramount....as you have found out . This was Fraser last year and we wanted to get back to our camp site. We had to wait something like 3 or 4 hrs before we sent the most modified vehicle through ( plus after also walking it first)

    Waiting

    As I didnt have a snorkel......used a tarp

So if not a snorkel........have a car bra or at worst a tarp. Comes in handy........plus also have snatch strap already attached just in case,

    Regards

Yeah, sound advice. The tarp / car bra I knew about, and actually attempted under guidance. However being completely green, I let our help show me how to do the tarp. That's where it all came undone. The tarp was placed across the front, using the BONNET to keep it in place. with no straps holding it anywhere else. I actually asked about securing things and got told something like "nah it should be fine, done it heaps before". That's the worst kind of advice to take. Car hits water (prob moving too fast - nerves). Tarp blows upward with water displacement, BONNET LIFTS - water everywhere... Wil cries!

They'd also offered just towing us through without and tarp of anything. I wasn't sure about the snatch strap with all that extra resistance. I'm scared of them. Thinking about incidents like that poor kid that got killed by one. I just didn't trust this situation.

    Bugger bugger bugger!

    Hi Wil,
I had a snorkel fitted to my 02 Disco just last month - prior to that I was acutely aware of water crossings and injesting the smallest amount of water into the engine. Rather than tarps or car-bras across the few deep creek or river crossings we attempted, I used my mate's car which has a snorkel like "Moses".....he went 1st and parted the water with me an inch up his chuff

Worked out OK fortunately and some of the crossings were quite deep! However, now I have a snorkel, I feel a whole lot better crossing any river or stream without worrying about a cup full of water ruining an engine.

BTW - was your engine running when you drowned the car or was it just wet elex that stopped it?

    Well, it's shopping time!
I'm looking at a couple of private sale discos. One is a 99 D2 and the other is an 02 D2. Both pretty similar. The 99 has upholstery damage to the drivers seat and a crack in the rear bumper (on that corner people keep standing on). The 02 is very tidy but has a large ding in the drivers side rear corner where a bus hit it. If I get the 99 I'll have funds for roof racks, snorkel and a trailer. All things we want.

    My 99 questions:
    Can ripped upholstery be repaired?
I think this is a late 99 model, that would make it the first of the D2s. Am I right in thinking that means CDL?
Any potential probs I should look for in this year model?

    My 02 questions:
Panel beating... Any advice/idea on cost? It's quite a deep but small ding. Imagine reversing the back corner into a concrete shelf halfway between the tail light and the bumper, right on the join between panels.

    General:
How can I check for cooling system corrosion?
Any suggestions of other stuff to check?
I'll be checking universals, compressor and SLS bags. Assuming it'll have oil leaks.

    Cheers,

    Wil

    Back to the drowning..

Did it stop cause water in ECU or water down the inlet into the donk?

By my on site diagnosis I'd say it was water in the ECU and transmission controller that brought it to a standstill. There appeared to be a tiny droplet of water after the air filter, but it was 99% dry. The ECU was a bit wet, and the transmission controller was drowned. I tipped water out of it. Engine would start, then run for a second and die immediately with a warning light. After a while the ECU went nuts and dash lights/chimes were going off without the key in the ignition. Had to disconnect the battery to prevent it.
    :-(

    Cheers

    Wil
