    Unhappy V8 Top Hat Liners

    Hi all.
Can anyone please advise where the best place to buy top hat liner kits for the 3.9 V8? Preferably WA, but really don't care where from anymore.
Not confirmed yet, but thinking this is the road I'll be travelling!

Don't have the additional expenses for the "usual recommendation" of just slapping a 4.6 in, so looking at the alternative, and what seems to be a more permanent fix.

Some good reading here for those that haven't yet seen it:

    Cheers,

Check out Triumph Rover Spares website.
Was looking at a P38a sometime ago that was perfect bar the engine.
They were the cheapest in Australia for a rebuilt engine with the tophats.

    Tophat liners

Buy direct from Turner Engineering in the UK. Cost about $75 each. Check the website for details and email them for specs. Consider 9.35 pistons from the same source - about $50 each.

They have all sorts of goodies to go on with.

    Tophat liners

And I agree with LandyAndy - TRS give the best price/service combo in Oz for this type of stuff.

Import from UK? Remember the $1000 rule!

(Less than $1000 and no GST)

Try M&D engineering in Carlisle. I know a guy who purchased the liners from QLD and took them to these guys to fit in his D2 and has had no problems since.

M&D also claim to have had success by using normal liners and machining a step at the bottom of the bore to stop them moving, but I'd be sticking with top hat liners.

Davis Performance Landys in Sydnye did mine. If I recall correctly, the liners were $800 for the 8 (supply).

I have had 3 engines done with standard 3.9 liners with the step at the bottom
the first one did or is still doing over 400000k's the second is in my current rangie, I had it done over 8 years ago but only fitted the motor last year, and so far has done just on 20k and the third well I sold the rangie but I am sure its still going
Highly reccomend M&D I have been dealing with them since 1984

But if the bore cracks behind the liner the coolant travels upwards;the liner may not slip down with a ridge at its base, but the coolant escapes anyway. Only top hats resolve the problem completely - one reason some LR specialists won't guarantee even new Coscast blocks, but will stake their life on the top hat solution.

TR Spares quoted $3500- for a short top hat 4.6 around a year ago, would have been my solution except for finding a new short block cheaper.
