    TD5 what to look for?

    Hi All,

    I'm looking at purchasing a 1999 D2 TD5 which has done 200K.
It wll replace a much loved D1 auto V8i (gas converted) that I owned.

I have found one (its a private purchase) and the owner says has been serviced by LR dealer, and while I will get it looked over by a LR specialist here in Perth before I hand over the $$ is there anything that I should look out for or be prepaired to do after my initial purchase.

Also can an extended warrentee be purchased without going through a dealer?

    Thanks

Check out The Good Oil section for a variety of things that can happen. I think the most prevalent are the 3 Amigos (this should appear on an extended drive, but no guarantee), oil in the loom (this may not affect it now, but may later). They aren't show stoppers as they can be fixed, but if you know ahead of time you can use it to negotiate a better price and not get surprised by hidden costs afterwards.

If it has been serviced by a LR regularly there is a decent chance the loom may have been replaced in the last few years and it might be ok. Mine was last serviced by a dealer 5 years ago when I got it and the oil had started to become an issue.

A good drive to look for any unusual whines, crunches when changing gears both high and low range is good. Overheating would be harder to detect unless you can take it on a long drive. Then there are the things you look at on every car like rust, damage underneath from off road use, check for crash damage/repair by looking under carpet, engine bay, underneath etc.

You are probably already checking these things out and the LR specialist should be able to identify the others if he knows his game but I just thought I would be thorough.

I just got the exact model you are talking about and other than the few issues I mentioned above (but hey I also enjoyed fixing them!) I am enjoying it so far. Good luck!

    TD5 What to look for?

    Hi Pads,

    Appreciate your thoughts.

Have been focused on engine details (TD5 new to me) and had not given thought to underbody damage, checking hi and low range, how auto's operating etc etc....as on my old D1 it as a given that all OK

Thats why this site and the members feedback are much appreciated.

Now just awaiting monies from the insurance company to come through so we can make a purchase.

    Cheers,

    Baggy

Pretty much like any car every thing can go wrong. But a quick list for me would be; oil leaks, water leaks, fuel leaks, exhaust manifold leaks, a nice smooth sounding motor through the rev range, oil in the water, fuel in oil, quick response of the SLS when set to high mode, any slippage in auto , need I continue! Good luck.

Lift up the carpets and check for rust especially in the back, water leaks through the roof racks when the foam seal under them goes hard with exposure to the sun. Look out for the 3 amigos, take a pretty long test ride activating the brakes as much as possible.
Front hamonic dampener pulleys go and are $1000+ to replace, make sure you run the aircon, any rattles may be the balancer.
