Recently had an O'ring break & coolant soaking into the carpets of my discovery td5..removed heater matrix (badly) with a screw driver & think I may need a new heater matrix & alloy pipes as they're kinked & bent a bit from my struggle with them![]()
Was wondering if anyone can give me directions on removing the dash so I can have better access to the alloy pipes, heater matrix & clean some of the coolant thats still soaked into the spongey rubber under the heater assembly unit.
I have already got the glove box out, the panels under the drivers & passenger side foot wells. Have taken the casing around the steering wheel off, including the speedo's plastic hood.
Is the passenger side air bag next?
Does the radio need to come out also?
Has anyone been there done that?![]()
If it's similar to the D1 update dash, the job is relatively simple and only takes a couple of hours and doesn't need a dash removal. You can put most of that stuff back....
Fortunately for you, I had the repair page bookmarked.

Oh, and thread moved.

If you need to replace the two pipes that go up to the firewall, then the dash may have to come out. I think there are two screws that hold the pipes to the heater/AC unit at the firewall end and they come out from the firewall side.
So not only dash out but heater/AC unit out.![]()

Yes the pipes are stuffed & need to come out, I have bought more from a wrecker's & a new heater core from the US.
Bascially I want instructions on how to take the dash out, I realise it's a fiddley job but just want to know where all the nuts & bolts are & any order in which to remove them.
There is quite a bit of coolant still soaked into the rubber sponge under the heater assembly & I would like to remove it & clean all under there..
I want to take the long way round..![]()
Have you got the workshop manual?

You don't need toremove the dash. The clamp that holds the pipes does screw on from the firewall side. Cut this tab off. Cut stright vertical section from pipes and replace with hose. Undo all fixings from the underside of the drivers side dash, this can be flexed out enough to slide the new matrix in. Loosely cable tie hoses together.
Yep already unscrewed clamp that holds pipes to the firewall.. I had toyed with the idea of a makeshift pipe fitting (flexihose) but don't want to risk having more leakage as it has been quite a job cleaning carpet etc.
I am quite aware I don't have to take the dash out to remove the heater matrix or the alloy feeder pipes. Just wondering how to take the dash out?? I have the RAVE shop manual but surely there is a more detailed book manual?![]()
So I gather to remove the heater assembly I need to take the dash out? I have new pipes, tried to get the old ones out today but they are screwed into the plastic tab at the back of the heater assembly. I can see a good day or 2 of tinkering coming my way
Bought the Haynes workshop manual online, does anybody know if this has detail on how to remove the dash?
