A decent locksmith should have a frequency indicator. (it's about the size of a pocket calculator but twice as thick). All they do is press both bottons, one on the key and one on the indicator and it displays the frequency. (If you live in Brisbane the guys at Millennium Locksmith Wolloongabba has one).

The numbers don't mean squat. (I previously thought the same)

Replacing the battery also does squat. Gez we'd be shagged if we needed to program it everytime. It's amazing LR didn't try this....:D

Thanks, time to hit the locksmiths

When I bought my D2 I had only one key, so had another cut for a spare (no fob) at a proper locksmith.
Not only did he have the correct key pattern in stock (hardware shops, bunnings etc. did not), but the asking price was less than half that quoted by others, at around five bucks.
At least with a plain key cut, you can use the EKA code process to fall back on, if anything happens to the FOB.
In short - I too am looking for a new FOB:D.
