Robert - thanks mate. Very helpful. Predictably mine is the earlier one the 6413 - the dearer one! I can never understand the price difference between what should be the same alternator - the engine management and charging system specs didnt change as far as I was aware but clearly there must be a relevant difference.

I just purchased one from that parts guru in the US Will Tillery. $337 AUD delivered in 4-5 days by UPS - Bosch OEM. Cheapest here was $960 plus delivery from BMI...
So now I get an excuse to drive my D1 for a week.

I kept my old regulator, which I rebuilt using new brushes I managed to find. It's a pig of a job because it's built in a way you can't theorically renew brushes if you don't break the regulator, but with patience, a soldering iron and a drill, it's possible.
Nice to hear you got yours from Will Tillery. he has good parts at very good prices, and it's closer from Oz than the UK.
I had some HD coil springs sent by paddocks, they reached me in 2 days, and shipping from the uk was just 10 pounds.
Once you fit your new alt you can try to rebuild yours, and keep it as a spare (i do that with my 300Tdi RRC, as that particular alt is very failure-prone).

Yep - thanks mate. I new about that one, however I decided on OEM for the alternator. Thats not to say the non-gen one wouldnt be fine, and for some stuff I am happy to go aftermarket, but decided to go genuine given the price difference.
