Why did the pump fail, could it be rubbish or water picked up in the tank ?Quote:

Start fault finding with the most simple things first, ie the fuses.

Hi mate, here is some info from RAVE so you can check your pump directly by applying voltage.

The fuel pump has a maximum current draw of 15 Amps at 12.5 V and is protected by a 20 Amp fuse in the engine compartment fusebox.
The pump receives a feed from the battery via fuse 10 in the engine compartment fusebox and the fuel pump relay. The relay is energised by the ECM when the ignition switch is moved to position II.
If fuses are okay, I understand that if you hit the underside of the fuel tank with a mallet, they have been known to come to life.
Doing it with the ignition on may help also.
It must be worth a try in your situation.

Had car me and my 2 boys Brought up by Opel City Towing this morning left Coober Pedy at 1am got to Alice at 9am at the door of Suttons. The wife and my 14 month old girl got on the grey hound bus. Neil at Suttons was straight on the job it was the fuel pump which coursed the car to get Hot no damage done. After a second hand fuel pump was put in went for a run up the high way thing was running like a jet.
At Alice in the deset and will take of back to Darwin in the monring.

Happy endings all round:angel::),they do start with a thump on the tank!;got my mates going twice with a back-hander of my fist but third time no luck,but it got him home and another month or so!Good idea to keep the tank above 1/4 to keep the pump cool and lubricated!

Skelz, glad to see you up and running again. Same thing happened to me the other week.
I believe that the over heating coolant stopped cooling the fuel and caused the pump to overheat and cook. Cue replacement.

Glad you got home safe mate, I use to live in Alice and have done that drive a number of times. Would have felt very alone in a break down situation, especially with the wife and kiddies on board.
Got a question though...... I might have missed something in the thread..... but how did the fuel pump cause the over heat. You said the needle went into, or close to the red. Is this because the the pump had lowered the presure causing a lean fuel mixture and loss of power? Did the dealer give you a reason for the engine getting hot. Just interested to know!
