    Intermittent whine.

    Hi Guys

As some of you know, I just completed a 2500km trip towing 1.5 tonne.

Sometimes on this trip I noticed a high pitch whine coming from the engine (passenger side). At some points it happened on the freeway at 110kph and at others when coming into a town and slowing down and didn't seem to change pitch.

In total, it probably only happened 4-5 times and didn't last too long and I didn't lose any power at the time either. Since being back, I've not noticed the whine ... even did a trip up the F3 on the weekend and didn't hear it.

Any ideas? Turbo, hoses, exhaust manifold gasket ???

I've not noticed it before, however have only had the car for 30,000kms (just about to tick over to 100,000kms)

    Thanks

    Craig

Sounds as tho it could be i/cooler hoses, but would've thought you may have lost some power..

Check the hose clamps on the hoses from the turbo to the I/Cooler..

Do you have silicon hoses on these?

Thanks for that MickS ... I figured someone would come up with a comment like that!

Just the reason I wrote "...coming from the engine (passenger side)."

They never made a noticeable difference to mine, but the OE hoses have a habit of delaminating on the inside..

Not sure if its the start of that, or maybe it was just the turbo working harder with the trailer.

If the hoses delaminate bad enough you will end up going not very far.

If unsure pull I off and look inside, if the hose is bubbling on the inside it time to get new ones..

I'd look at the exhaust studs, the nuts may only be loose or a couple of studs could be broken.

The flex joint on the exhaust may be on it way out, check that for movement and soot.

Check / lubricate the wastegate arm / threaded rod. When my friends was a little sticky, that resulted in a "whine / scream" and offcourse lack of power.
