Urgent Question on my partners D2 V8

    Hey guys,

I would like some fellow forumers opinions or advice about an overheating incident with the Landy.

We were driving down the freeway and all of a sudden the temp gauge went from Normal right up into the red zone. It was quite sudden and we had to pull over to the verge. I told him to let it idle for 5 minutes then either get off the freeway and then called the NRMA.

The temperature went to normal again but as soon as we started moving again the temp went up. Lucky we were near an exit.

There were no fluid leaks from the radiator with the exception of what appeared like a bit of steam or smoke from under the bonnet but only briefly. We let the engine cool and had it towed back home.

On further inspection today I found what appears to be oil is spattered around the front of the engine as per the pictures below.

I also looked at the fluid level for the radiators and it appeared ok until I asked my partner if he had been checking the fluid level in the radiator and he said yes. He was only looking at the *stained level* not opening the caps.

    It was empty.

So I put 7 litres of water into the resevoir and there appears to be no leaks but it was pretty clear it run out of water.

The engine still turns over fine, all fan belts are working and there is no smoke from the exhaust pipe nor is there any water in the engine oil.

My biggest concern is whether or not this is just a *lack of water event* or something more serious like a dud water pump or something worse. The oil splatters are what concerns me most. The car had been driving fine previously and no warning lights had come on.

I've checked all pipes and hoses and they seem to be fine - there are a lot them. lol.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Warm regards,

    MX

It looks a bit like your water pump is stuffed. Not the hardest job to do, you need to have a fan spanner for the fan clutch. When the radiator is full, just drive it for 5 minutes and stop, then look for leaks underneath and under the bonnet.

It could well be a water pump, what is more of a concern is that the temp gauge went in the red and possible damage from that.

All cars should have a low water alarm, its an absolute must in my opinion.
Question is, why is water so low in first place or was it because of pump failure?

Warped heads, slipped liners etc can all come into play now.
My neighbour 2 doors down had done similar on his 04 V8Hse that I always had my eyes on.
His best quote from reputable landie dealer for full rebuild and new heads etc was $12k.
I told him where he should go for quotes but they had their own ideas.
Well they sold their car for under $10k and vowed to never buy another Landie again. Not the cars fault, a hose split and they drove from Noarlunga(50km's away) to Prospect.
Motor seized once they got home.

Hope you have more luck though.

A small water leak will eventually cause the water to boil in the system which throws a lot of water out of the overflow bottle in a short space of time.

Check your hoses for splits and connections for leaks, check the viscous hub operates correctly and the radiator is not blocked.

Topping up the water before a short trip will prevent boiling but a blocked rad and non functioning hub will cause boiling on longer trips.

My D2 V8 has 160ks on it and I have done the hoses, thermostat, overflow bottle and cap, viscous hub and radiator.

If you can nurse it along for a week or so getting replacement parts from OS will be much cheaper, even with air freight. I got my parts from Brookwells but there are many others to choose from.

Have a look through some of my earlier posts and you will see that I have had similar probs.

Is the top of the fan shroud missing or did you take it off for the photo?

Are we all ignoring all of the oil that's been thrown around the engine bay for a reason? Sure, the lack of coolant is a bad thing, but the oil on top of that is not a good sign. I wouldn't be surprised if you've done a head gasket.
Your coolant has probably purged very suddenly, which is why you saw a very quick rise in temperature. The result is most likely a cooked engine, warped heads, which has allowed the oil to spew out.

If it were mine I'd have it towed straight to a reputable land rover mechanic for diagnosis.

Do not start it. Do not drive it.

Would a head gasket leak oil? Maybe if the steam pressured the sump or rocker covers through the push rod holes or piston rings and spat it out somewhere like the filler, rocker covers or valley? This would make the oil milky though wouldnt it?

Even if the head gasket is gone the cooling system will still need a serious look at to prevent re-occurrence.

Probably because it isn't likely to be oil. It is more likely to be the remnants of coolant after the water has evaporated. Indicating the leak is somewhere at the fron tof the engine where the fan will blow it around. Could possibly be one of the hose T joins failing.
