The belt is all one piece, so you'd know if it was a broken belt.
First check is your aircon gas and then the compressor. There was a recent post on how to run a diagnostic on your climate control.

Driving back from toowoomba today in my td5 series 2 and my air con stop cooling. Pulled over a little while later to get some fruit and there was a rattling sound coming from the engine bay. Stopped the engine could not see anything on inspection, restarted the engine and no rattling sound. Drove home air con still no good but car running fine with no more rattles. Just wondering if anyone has had this experience? Not sure how the air con runs in the disco I am making a guess that it might be a loose or broken belt.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Gday Nathan, Check the center bolt on the compresor clutch pulley, have had mine come out twice.10 mm bolt bit of loctite problem solved.

Thanks boys fo the advice, i will try and get under tonight and have a look around. Hopefully it is as simple as your fix Ben.
Had my a/c go through a couple of stop/start cycles recently then just stopped working. Took it to a service place, low gas and a suspect electrical contactor replaced. Nothing that the self diagnostics would have picked up either.
2002 Td5 first issue with this component.

Ben looks like you were right, the front of the clutch plate had fallen off. I have managed to recover the actual front part, however the bolt is no where to be seen.
Is there a particular 10mm bolt I need length wise etc. Also is there a plate in between the front and back parts that I need to install. The front section is polished and the back part doesn't look as warn.
Also does anyone know if there is a certain tension required on the bolt.

Gday nathan, the bolt should be about 10mm long with a flanged head. probe a wire down the hole to check the depth if unsure. Make sure the clutch disengages once the bolt is tightened,dont forget the loctite? maximum tension on the bolt 8nm(5ft lbs). as far as i know there is nothing inbetween the two parts. Its lucky you found the front of the clutch. The second time mine came off it hit the fan and broke a blade offand landed ontop of the compressor.Better born lucky than rich!

All sorted, dropped into the air con guy and he gave it the once over and fitted it with a couple of spacers to ensure it disengaged. I did think I was lucky it didnt damage the fan, the was a couple of small dings on the clutch plate though. I am over to my mates on the weekend to show him on his d2.
