    scratchy radio

    Hey Guys

My original Disco stereo had a hernia the other day. Wouldnt play/eject cd's, the display was all scrambled and the fm stations stuck to one station only.

I replaced it with a VDO head unit, and now whenever you put the radio on fm the sound is really scratchy.

Ive tried a new aerial and coax cable, but still the same. The sound when playing cd's is normal, no scratchy sound at all.

    Any ideas?

What type of aerial have you got - a "conventional" one or is it the kind embedded into window glass as per my classic rangie.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

If you've tested two different antennas and you had good sound quality from the radio previously, I'd say the problem is with the head unit itself.

Is it a brand new unit?

    It's VDO!

    Their tuners are pretty poor.
    Even worse in fringe areas.

Kenwood, Alpine or Pioneer have great reception

You said what I was thinking. I'd never get a VDO, but hey, I've been indulging in Alpine and Pioneer systems for years.

Even crappy radios should still provide reasonable RF reception.

Does it make any difference when u plug the co-ax in at all?

Did u have the the 2nd test antenna grounded when u did it?
They should be grounded to the chassis to get a good groundplane?
If it was just plugged in and sitting in the floor of the car, its not really a good comparison test.

I had the 2nd aerial bolted to the bull bar, cleaned the spot up where I bolted it on.
I did think it may have been the head unit, I got it for my old car about 3 years ago and never ended up putting it in. So technically its brand new..

Might give a pioneer or an alpine a go. See if that makes any difference. or load my Ipod up with more songs!!

    Thanks for your help guys.
