    Front end "clunk" cured!

    Hi all,

For a while now I've had a clunk coming from the front end upon quick direction changes or on random corners.

Every bloody "mechanic" has diagnosed it as worn bushes, which were then replaced and remedied the problem for a day or so.

Not convinced I decided to have a poke around under the front end.

All the bushes were fine and nothing was loose, until.....

The ACE piston thingo on the drivers side wasn't bolted to the chassis properly and was rattling around.

How any mechanic failed to diagnose this is beyond me.

    Clunk gone.

I'll be looking at mine for sure!!!
After you'd tightened the bolt, was there still some "play" in the whole piston setup itself? If you were to grab the piston and twist did it still move?

The piston should be able to move as much as the bush will allow, which shouldn't be much. It can rotate, like any hyd cylinder assy, in the cylinder. Excess movement = worn bush. (and we all know there's nothing worse than when your bush wears out).

There is still play in the piston itself, thanks to the bush... The problem was that the bolt securing the bush to the chassis was loose and moving around in its mounting hole.

In order to tighten it, you'll need an allen key to hold the bolt in place while you tighten the nut, otherwise it will just spin on itself.

It's all very tight in there now, with only marginal free play from the bush.. as in not much at all.

I imagine the ACE would have been working overtime in order to compensate for the free play of the loose nut.

Not such a bad thing - the dealer I bought mine from had no idea about it either - didn't even mention it in the sales pitch. And I was not about to mention it to him when I saw the two caps on the PWS/ACE reservoir
