what's screwed to the cross member?

I spend most of the day under the newly acquired D2a removing the sump to check the oil pump bolt. It was pretty secure with a touch of loctite visible on two threads. It's now got a whole lot more...

Anyway, when removing the cross member level with the rear of the front wheels, I noticed four holes in the middle of it: groups of two, offset and about 6 inches apart. What used to go in here? Can't find the relevant pic in the workshop manual.

Guess there are some mysteries LR like to keep exactly that!!

Unlike other things in life, not every hole needs something in it.

I pulled mine off to remove the transmission on the weekend and wondered the same thing.
I agree with the possibility of drain holes but they are in an unusual pattern - almost random.

When I was preping race cars we used to start numbering as we removed stuff that wouldn't go back in.

Yep, drain holes me thinks. After all, the rhs x member is bent up at each end! PS: check the mating faces of the X member for rust.
