    tweaking td5- hotter engine?

Like most of us, I'm considering chipping the ecu, and generally tweaking the td5 to get more power. What is in the back of my mind is this -- does more power equal a much hotter engine, and if so, is this desirable? Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Not desirable. Heat = wear and tear.

You can do stuff like warp exhaust manifolds.

There are things you can do to minimize the damage. Some guys on here have had theirs ceramic coated to reduce heat problems.

Others will know more as I haven't done either, but I suppose you just have to balance the pros and cons.

A chip does mean a hotter engine, but you can also fit a performance intercooler that will get rid of most the extra heat. I had mine chipped and the EGT temperatures are very high am hoping for the new intercooler soon and should bring it down to normal. Something else is that it also depends on the way you drive it after it is chipped, if you floor it you will find you get it very hot very fast. Drive it the same as you did before it was chipped you will find with most chips better economy and less EGT heat.

Hi Matt - can you tell me how a bigger intercooler makes the engine run cooler? I would have thought that a bigger intercooler makes the air denser to give more power, so it would really make the engine run hotter, but I don't know all that much about intercoolers....

    Cheers

Notice how diesel engines dont have a throttle body as such.
In general terms petrol motors - more fuel = cooler EGT,
more air = leaner mixture hotter EGT.

Diesel engines - more fuel = hotter EGT
    more air = cooler EGT.

Bigger intercooler alone will make a limited amount of difference, but a bigger cooler and more boost gives the motor more air and cooler air. keeping EGTs in a safe area for a chipped motor.

I have a TRS chip as mine is an MSB ECU and the EGT's are good until you peg it hard and hold it. A boost box and bigger cooler will bring these down.

You will have problems if you achieve constant , high EGTs.

There is a wealth of information here on chips and upgrades that a search under ECU upgrades will uncover.

There are members here like Tombie and Discowhite and ohers (sorry if I missed others) who provide all manner of tweaks which wont wreck your engine.

    cheers

Theres an article in the 4x4 Aust Gear Guide by husband and wife team travelling all around the globe in a 2004 TD5 Disco, manual.

    Travel gear = heaps
    Safety gear = heaps
    Survival gear = heaps
In car electronics = they have it all.
Suspension Mods = you bet and they needed it for all the weight.
    Engine Mods = ZERO

Fair enough, but they are not towing a caravan. I am in the market for a new performance intercooler/chip upgrade/boost box for my TD5. Was looking at the TD5 alive "manual" intercooler but it won't fit the Aussie spec models. Who makes the biggest and best intercooler?.

I was looking at the TD5 alive cooler also and was advised by TD5Alive to use the Auto cooler as it would fit without interfering with the gearbox oil cooler. These coolers are made by SERC (good quality)
BAS have quoted a larger cooler and boost box to my door at 495 GBP. Not sure what manufacturer.

ASE intercoolers here in OZ at nearly 1200 AUD average price. These were what Tombie was selling previously. Add your boost box to that.

Decision time this week as the money has been set aside and just need to decide what will give me best value for money. At this stage Im leaning towards the BAS combo as they obviously know there stuff, (so too TD5 Alive) but I know Tombie has dealings with BAS guys and this sways me their way.

The ASE cooler, being here in OZ appeals for that reason, but I can do my sons and my vehicle with a BAS cooler and boost box for one ASE set up and boost box from either co. Buying at home with such a big difference is hard to justify for my wallet. Shipping time, costs and insurance is irrelevant for my location, as I have to pay for it and wait anyway and UK gear often ships cheaper and arrives faster than local!

    cheers

Before you go the remap way, remove the cat and the middle silencer box - you will be amazed at the performance gains. Bang for buck the best mod ever on a TD!

Also, if you are going to remap, please fit an Engine Monitoring system like the Mad Man. This will enable you to monitor your EGT and tap off if it gets too hot.

I would also recommend you get the exhaust manifold and turbo housing ceramic coated to help cool the engine, and of course a larger intercooler is a must.
