The ome headunit & the new one I have both have iso plugs, I've plugged them in, screen lights up, functions normally, you can see the cd timer ticking over but somewhere in the wiring the power from the aftermarket headunit isn't getting to the amp therefore, no sound.

That's good that the two head units have the same connectors, it makes connections nice and easy.
What you'll need to check is that the speaker wires from the OEM connector line up with the new unit. They probably do, as I found the wiring when I did my HU pretty standard, but worth checking anyway.
What you'll also need to do is isolate the remote power line from the OEM connector to the amp, plus determine whether the amp is earthed from the head unit wiring or if it's independent.
Once you've separated the power and earth wires for the amp, you'll be able to hot wire it onto the acc switch, or indeed your new head unit might have a remote lead (usually blue) that you can use to power the amp as soon as the head unit is switched on.

I hope this all makes sense! Of course all of this advice is based on the majority of installs I've done on cars with factory amps, without amps and installing aftermarket amps. I can't imagine there would be anything too different with the LR setup.
