The cricket noise is usually the front double uni joint (Cardan) its the sound of dry needle rollers disintergrating.
Pushing and pulling at the joint in place may not reveal much.
Probably better to drop it and check for any binding or looseness.

Ok, will do but is it normal for the DC do fail even when it's full of grease? I remember taking note of how many pumps of the gun it took before the joint purged & it was only about 1.5 & the old grease that came out was pretty clean?

I agree replacing the boot is needed, but, are your rear universals on that shaft greasables?
Anything will fail eventually, but the original sealed DCs were an issue.
If you have greasables there they will be preferable but if you have a lift the angle is increased and they need to be checked regularly just to be certain.
I can`t see the front spline making those sort of noises even if worn.

All in, good as gold now, front joint took 10 pumps of the gun & just for good measure I put another 3 in each nipple on the DC.
Jiminy cricket noise gone so I guess it hard to tell if it was the front or the rear causing the noise. Thanks again to all who chipped in.
    Cheers
