Name This Noise

Your mission, if you choose to except it...... is to help with ( you guessed it ) a noise.

The symptoms are as follows:

1. A squeking noise that sounds like a cricket on far too much speed, interesting enough, i think its brother is a little slower ( yes, a double squeak noise)

2. This noise/s can only be heard under the following conditions

a) in gear and driving (never in P or N... fantastic for the mechanic)

b) only seems to come 'on' at 1600rpm and above, but not when i try to mash the go pedal through the firewall.

c) noise goes quiet when i back off the accelerator, regardless of rpm

3. My speedy cricket/s have gone from soft and intermitant over the last 500kms and are now louder and on full song all the time except for the above.

Recent parts replaced etc in the last 7 weeks (maybe a by product of these)
1. Viscous fan and boost acuator (darwin)
2. Harmonic balancer (darwin)
3. accelerator pedal (alice springs)
4. 600km tow back to alice springs (P.S Neil @suttons in Alice is a great mechanic)
5. Air flow meter (alice springs)

I hope i don't sound too crazy but when you're travelling around australia ( which i am) and you're spending ALL (and i mean ALL) your money on a car it can become very nerve racking.

Guessing TD5..

Mine had a noise like you discribe.
It was the viscous fan mount bearing, the one in the timing case.
Mine was turning the outer shell in the housing.
Give away was movment at the fan blades, grabed both sides and wobbled

Yes, Sorry, the car is a TD5 Auto.

I replaced the viscous fan assenbly in darwin, Are uou saying it might be inside the motor at the front???

Could be the front Cardan universal joint on the way out.

If it lets go, and the crickets do sound ominous,it will most likely destroy your auto case when it breaks and thrashes around.

Or just the usual exhaust manifold leak. Check the rear most nut/stud & see if it's still there.

There is a bearing held in the timing case by a circlip.
The viscous fan mounts to the shaft that goes through it.
This thread may help

Make sure you check your front shaft as mentioned 1st.
Costly if it is that and it "lets go".

With your window down, find a modestly steep hill and if it is the front shaft universals then you should hear it even below 1600 as soon as the load comes on just starting up the hill from stopped. It will clearly increase in frequency with shaft rotations increasing with increasing road speed. Does sound like crickets. Easier still get under the car and have a look.

My experience with exhaust manifold leaking is that it sounds a bit like a slipping fan belt and you will find the loose or missing nut/s as previously stated.

Good luck finding it.

Try this for a test....

Turn off your climate control and check if the noise has stopped. If so, your clutch bearing on your AC compressor is likely shot.

Symptoms sound exactly like mine.

Have a read of "Disco 2, front prop shaft grease points" there's some pics & explanations in this thread that may explain what you're experiencing & failing that, it's always a good idea to be sure your joints are well lubed, my rubber boot protecting the furthest forward uni was split therefore, even when I filled it as much as possible with grease it'd just fling out with the rotation of the front shaft. Fingers crossed my new boot is in my post box (cheers Phil at discovery spares) today!!!

This I believe is the cause of my Jiminy Cricket noise

Mine split down the centre through the widest point of the boot's circumference.
Will post a pic when I get the old one off.
Would I be correct in assuming I've gotta drop the front of the prop shaft out to replace?
