It's only the face of the radio that is 80mm. The hole for the radio is smaller than it looks. When you remove the radio you will see step of plastic just below the radio hole (still within the 80mm hole). This will come out (probably breaking to a degree on the way). You need to push in and up from the lower front to try to push the clips in whille pushing upto lift the clips from their holes.
The face of the radio is 80mm (1.5DIN) and curved to match the dash. The hole that it slots into is only single DIN. The plugs (on my 2000D2 and my fathers 99D1) are both DIN std, a company called aeropro make from this to any manufacturers plug (available at Repco etc but found that repco stock the best variety). Unless you buy a radio that also is DIN plugged then it'll plug straight in.
For headlights, upgrade the wiring no1 and add independent relays (H/L, L&R). and change globes for some whiter and possibly higher wattage. I'm running some 110/90's (found at autobarn) they look blue (on the glass) and are a large round ball & run something other than halogen as a gas. But they draw very litttle extra current over the 60/55's (by comparison to other 100/90's tried (product of being more efficient?)) and put out a very clear white light. Set me back around $25-30 ea. The only globes I'd actually spend big $$ on are PIAA's but you also (well used to) need their wiring as their relays etc had specific plugs on them.
I can certainly believe that you've done no amount of research! You must be doing it wrong as this site has covered just about everything.
Yes, there will be noise if the climate control is on... Is it just noise that's coming through the vents as the car increases in speed, or is it the fan blowing air out?
I don't know what you're talking about as the Disco's have quite good headlights. Try upgrading the globes? Maybe the incorrect ones are in there?
As previously mentioned, the head unit is absolutely a single din setup. It's just got a stupid oversized fascia on it. You can fit 1.5 and double din in there, but you'll need to hack away at the dash and potentially do some remoulding.
Don't worry about the CD stacker - they are prone to skipping and very expensive for what they are.
I call a couple hours of googling pretty extensive (or no amount).
The noisy CC is absolutey not normal and it does increase with speed!
granted maybe the headlights arent sighted correctly isnt helping.
Yes the radio is 1 din I removed it today. I picked up a new audio unit today check it out for $499

& to think none of us on here had any idea what we was on about :)
What fan speed are you using on the AC? Mine makes a racket at high fan speed setting eg demist mode, I'm not sure if it is a fault or not but I rarely run the fan higher than two bars, it is very quiet at this even at highway speeds.
Cheers Matt
Single or double, just go to a reputable hifi installer and get one installed. Cut the wires if needed as ou will never go back to originalone. When ou change the head unit, you will find the speakers will be well and truly shot too probably. They are terrible unless you had the Harman Kardon upgrade.
I found Alpine worked best for me with Focal speakers and splits and external crossover plus a powered sub under the seat as not enough bass gets pumped out of 100mm speakers no matter what.
A kombi and a micro bus are different, Kombi does not have the 8 seat configuration and was made at great success for many years right up to now.
The lights you are referring too are now 50 years old, probably were fine in their day.
Your car must be the morris minor standard version(poverty pack). No extras at all but look on the bright side, no cd player to stop working:p:p:p
Don't cut the wires, for a few dollars it's a plug and play 2 min connection vs how long to rewire?
