Thread: Purchasing high mileage disco

Hopefully your FIL would not not his daughter stranded in the middle of no-where, so if he HAD any reservations he would steer you clear,,,

having said that,,

any car is only worth what someone is willing to pay,, what is the red book value? what do carpoint/sales offer at that price? what major/safety service items have been done by the LR joint?

having said THAT,,

owning a LR is not for the faint hearted,, it is NOT an A to B car,

I have always found purchasing a vehicle from a friend or family member is the best way to end up in serious conflict if and when things go wrong with the vehicle which often happens.

Personally I wouldn't buy a 300k TD5 no matter what but having said that there is a guy around here with one that has supposedly over 450k D2a on the clock and it has not been rebuilt.

Me thinks me is the luckiest bloke in the world or the biggest BS...er.

To the OP.

I do agree that buying a car off a family member or friend can be a bad thing, but only if that family member or friend willingly sells it to you with an understanding that the car has issues and hasn't advised you about it.

The TD5 will run way past 300k, as long as it's been well maintained. By the sounds of it, this one has a full history. So, you'd expect all of the regular maintainence and potential breakdowns that come along with a high milage car.

Pedro was onto something there, in stating that you'd think your father in law would not want to see his daughter driving around in an ureliable car.

$12k is a reasonably good price for a TD5 with ACE, SLS and that many k's.

I agree, wouldn't touch it unless it was for $3k and then expect to spend some.

Terry, I thought you were refering to yourself for a second there but you don't have a Td5 in your list of trucks. Assuming me should be he/she.

Tell your FIL he's dreaming. Must have some nerve or has totally lost the plot. I'm going the later.... after all, he owns a Land Rover.

300,000 kms is only around 186,400 miles (give or take).
I used to know peeps in the UK running 200 and 300 TD motors with over 300,000 MILES and little issues.
At least the ones that were looked after properly.

They reckoned that properly maintained D motors had just been run in aound then, and would expect another 200,000 miles out of them......thats ANOTHER 320,000 odd kms!

The key (as always) is how well it's been looked after.

FWIW, My dad sold a 1999 TD5 Defender with 330,000 on the clock not long ago. He had a fairly low price on it, but it seemed that people didn't want to know about it with that much mileage. It was still pulling great and using no oil, but the perception of mileage turned potential buyers away before even entertaining the possibility of making an enquiry. TD5's can do that much mileage, but it depends on the history.

Ended up selling to a family friend and and it's still going well. Still has the original clutch!
