Depends who you go to. When I was getting my exhaust fitted there was a silvia being fitted with a 2" straight through exhaust, no cat, no mufflers (at all). :eek:

I asked the exhaust fitter if it was a turbo model. He said no, it was NA, and he said he had warned the owner that he would be yellow stickered (defected) by the police as soon as he drove it out of the shop - said the guy wouldn't listen.

I am not sure what the legalities are about doing unroadworthy mods? AFAIK the shop/tradesman cannot get in trouble as long as they advise the owner that it is illegal/inadvisable. Anyone confirm???

I asked three different exhaust places how to go about modifying the exhaust on my falcon. All I had in the system was the cat & a hotdog but wanted it to be louder. First two said there was nothing more I could do but the third suggested knocking the brick out of the cat but he was unable to do it in the workshop for legal reasons & explained how best to do it myself at home. I guess it's got to do with the whole deal that business owners are doing their best to eliminate themselves from, not so much responsibility but, having the finger pointed at them when/if something goes wrong. If a guy does a roady on a car & passes it & the car owner heads down the road & stacks into a tree & it's found that the brakes were metal on metal, the finger is immediately pointed at the person that passed it as roadworthy & IMHO, quite rightly so. A fella who refuses to enter into something that has a higher chance of getting his ass kicked by whatever authority he has to answer to I think has every right to refuse to do the job.
In the case of the Sylvia, I'd like to think I could look past the monetary value & refuse the job cause that bloke, when he gets pulled over & canaried is immediately going to say " But this fella that works/owns here said it was ok"

Is actually a ceramic perforated matrix,

The round one os exactly the same (bar being on opp side and having a heat shield) The one on the pass side is about the size of a small cereal packet (on its long edge).

c_a_g is just trying to use big words to impress you.

Basically, a the main part of a catalytic converted is like a bundle of thin straws for gas to flow through. The straws are made of a ceramic material (basically aluminium oxide usually). On the inside of each "straw" there is a coating, or "wash coat" of the active catalyst particles - usually platinum/paladium/rhodium, however other elements like iridium are being used these days as they are cheaper.

The wash coat of active catalyst only accounts for a very small proportion of the mass of the ceramic matrix (aka bundle of straws) - only about 100-300 ppm.

Honeycomb :)

Looks like a muffler. Remove & replace with a straight-through pipe. Do the same for the middle silencer box as well.

If you have seen a gas heat gun with the ceramic piece inside, That is basically what a cat is inside.
