Lightbulb Air filter box blown to bits......what to do?

Hi all, before I had my motor rebuilt and after two years of backfires, I blew apart the air box into small bits ( from the front due to bad spark etc) the box is dead. I've tried to fiberglass it back together and while it looks alright I fear it still has to many gaps between the top and bottom and the clasp are gone etc. A new one will cost $450 and from a wrecker about $200. From the states I can get one for $100 delivered (eBay) but I want to investigate a better option - is there one? I do not have a snorkel.

Can I make a RR steel round one fit? Is there an after market one that is better.....I've spent a pretty penny on the new motor and want to provide it with clean fresh air.

    Ideas?

I had similar problems with my P38A when I had a mixer LPG system, So I fitted a Disco1 steel air cleaner system. I'm sure it could be done with a D2.

This is my version of the bomb-proof D2 air cleaner conversion:

Early RRC air cleaner, VN Commodore connecting hoses.

I found it most important to close your plug gaps down for a D2, I go for 0.6mm and have had few problems since. 0.7mm max. recommended.

Thanks P38arover. I had read the post in the past but not sure it will fit a D2. the opening to the guard is a long oval shape and I think the return angle might be tight....though I plan to go to a wrecker on the weekend to try out different steel round boxes....had hoped to find a D2 specific solution....

Wow bee utey...is that it? Do you get enough cool air? What sort of filter do you use inside that bomb proof filter box?

The air filter element is a standard Coopers brand paper element, fits RRC. The headlamp area leaks plenty of cool air when you are moving, none of the 3 D2's I have done this to have had issues so far. If you really need more air for your D2 remove the gas mixer and go injected gas. Otherwise this set-up is quite adequate and cost effective. A gas mixer needs a certain amount of restriction to operate, so more air is not necessarily a good idea. It just runs leaner. Of course your mixtures will need checking/adjusting after an air cleaner change.

Bee Utey's and my version both use standard RRC/Disco 1 air filters. That means filter elements won't be a problem for any LR mechanic when you have it serviced.

If you have LPG injection you won't have an airbox blown up ever again.

Is there any reason one couldn't just fit a POD filter to the end of the pipework & have it sit in the same position as the steel box?
    This or similar?
