    Brisbane TD5 check??

    Hi All,

I'm interested in buying an TD5 in Arana Hill's that was on eBay, but the owner is not keen to take the car to M.R. Automotive, as it's too far to drive (apparently).

Does anyone know of a mobile mechanic (or someone closer to Arana Hills) that would be sufficiently knowledgable about TD5's to give it a decent looking over, and be able to read the codes?

Alternatively are there any nanocom equipped members in the area who'd be prepared to take a quick test and read the codes on my behalf?

    cheers
    Paul

    theres also me...

providing its not in a certain car yard in the magic mile area, Im apparently not welcome there after the last time I picked about 20 roadworthy faults on a just registered vehicle.

although ATM my T4 is down, pretty sure I can lay my hands on a nanocom or take the vehicle to MR for you since Im doing a run that way on saturday anyway and the car is closer to them than to me.

    Hi guys,

Thanks for the offers. I've decided the car wasn't worth the risk nor the hassle of driving it down to Melbourne.

The seller was less than communicative when it became clear that I wanted someone who knew Disco's to check the car. Given the history of the car which seems to have sat on a dealers lot for 9 months before having the rego cancelled and being sent off to auction last November. Apparently the car hasn't had a "proper" service since 2009/117k km. Another forum member had seen the car listed on eBay in January, so it's obviously been purchased as a wheeler dealer special.

I finally tracked down Shaun at TechnoBritish who said he was able to do a on-site pre-purchase inspection for a fairly reasonable price (about the same I've been quoted for workshop inspections on other D2's in Melbourne).

Anyway the seller has stopped responding to my emails so I've given up worrying about the car.

I'm seriously considering a very clean looking '99 D2 located much closer to home which was listed in the AULRO marketplace this morning.

    cheers
    Paul

    It's this car

    Land Rover Discovery Td5 (4x4) (1999) 4D Wagon 4 SP ... | eBay

The sub 150K mileage is tempting. However, the interior looks a little shabby, and there seems to a strong correlation between shabby interior and neglected mechanicals. It may well be sound, but I would definitely leave that call to someone who has physically checked the car.

    rego history attached fwiw.

'Tis a bugger. It had ACE too. I've just played the interstate purchase game the other way round and bought a Melbourne based 1999 Disco 2 and had it trucked to Brisbane.

Buying interstate is not an ideal way to buy a car but having a decent pre-purchase inspection was well worth it in our case. I paid $220 for the inspection and they showed up 4 major issues that meant it would've failed the RWC. Approx $1500 later and it's got Qld Rego and a couple of minor things still to sort (one of which was a RWC issue that seemingly wasn't picked up - non-functioning horn).

As always - be totally anal about checking with the seller what is/is not included in the deal. Mine had tow hitch and roof racks installed in the photos on carsales but the owner removed them from the vehicle as the price negotiation began.

And then the dirty bugger somehow failed to include the vehicle tool kit with the car. So I was minus a wheel lock nut key, wheel brace, tool bag, and unfortunately the 2 piece jack handle.

All these sorts of issues are made that much harder to resolve when the parties are a couple of thousand kms apart eh?

Best of luck with the game.

That car has been on ebay for at least 2-3 months now, he's been battling to sell it.

Exactly, the lowish kms and fact it's got ACE make it very tempting at the price.

On the other hand, you have to wonder why a dealer held on to it for 8 months then canceled the reg. That usually indicates there was a lack of interest in the car.

Another D2 I had inspected a couple of weeks ago was a bit similar. This had 137K and was being sold (and still is) by Blacklocks, and seemed a pretty good deal. My parents were visiting the area, and I arranged for them to test drive (Dad has a 96 V8i Disco). They rolled up at the designated time to find the detailers had just hosed out the interior and the car was undriveable. Apparently even after hosing the carpet had lots of red dust ground into it.

The car wasn't delivered to Ivan Clarke on the day we'd arranged for inspection due to a mix up with the detailers and this had to be rescheduled. When it was finally inspected Ivan found a list of problems a mile long - no service record since 100K, air filter box full of red dust, oil and coolant levels low, abs and turbo overboost faults, a door restraint strap torn off, diffs leaking oil, etc, etc. The assessment was that it had been used as a paddock car up near Dubbo, and to steer well clear. To be fair the salesman had identified some of these issues and had said their workshop would fix, but ultimately you can't fix years of neglect and abuse.

I notice the advert no longer contains the glowing description, but this is one to steer well clear of:

    2000 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY TD5 II 00.5MY Cars For Sale in VIC - carsales.com.au - carsales.com.au

Anyway these two cars have been an object lesson that low km is, in itself, no indicator of a decent car.

The best cars I've looked at so far have been private sellers with cars which have a fully document service history, and receipts for work done.

    cheers
    Paul
