Check your battery and terminals are secure and charge rate.
Shut off the motor for a few minitues.
    Restart and cross the fingers.
Might just be a hic up in system, the above worked for a mate not long ago.
    Cheers, Kyle

    If not, hope it is...

Allegedly the aircon drain pipes can leak onto the gear position switch....Or they get old & fail.
A failing gear position switch can cause this and also flashing gear numbers in the LCD display - in the end I had no indication in the display. The gear position switch isn't cheap, but very rewarding once installed.
    Fingers crossed!
    Cheers

Had it happen to me a few weeks ago, after I rapidly did a 3 point turn. So I bought a new xyz switch only to have the M&S issue disappear before I had the chance to to install it.
Oh well cant complain, at least I have a brand new genuine inhibitor switch as a spare I'm sure I'll need it one day.

THis happened to me last week but only the flashing m&s lights. LCD and gear changes were ok. I did what Kyle said. Shut of the car, lock and unlock the central locking, then restart the car. It worked for me and when I found out that the cause was the a/c drain hitting the gear position switch, i swiftly attached a hose to get those drips away from the switch.

Happened to me a few times and you end-up in the limp-home mode. Can be battery voltage related, but in 2 instances I pressed one of the buttons on the key fob incedently while turning the ignition key - I guess that triggered the problem. To fix it open the hood/bonnet and pull all engine related relays and fuses out and put them back in again. Start the engine - problem gone. Get's you movin' at least

Ok then, where do I start looking for the air-con drain? Mine has just started to flash when engaging reverse gear to drive out of the garage in the morning. Forward gears don't seem to be a problem? Eh??
