TD5 intercooler mod, is it possible?
Just curious if anyone has successfully installed on a D2 TD5, an intercooler laying flat under the bonnet on top of the engine with a scoop feeding it air?. Like a lot of the modern TD's. Is it possible or is there not enough room or some other reason?. I just think it would benefit more in that location. Open to thoughts on this if anyone has any.

Much better off with the intercooler in the factory location.

Sharkee, haven't seen any relocated there on standard engines.
Only good on top to shorten the intake tract for better response(don't have any numbers to compare here) or lift the IC out of the way of sticks etc.
If you top mount the IC AND do a lot of low speed driving the IC will soak up a lot of extra heat and transfer into the intake air, net decrease in efficiency.
you could use a water-to-air cooler to shorten the tract AND avoid the heat-soak issue. But with added complexity.
Cheers, Dave.

Up front is best spot.
Bonnet is a packaging exercise by silly Japanese manufacturers.
And odds of getting a stick on a TD5 is very slim, if the IC wasn't there I'd be more concerned for the radiator!!!!!
Car will run with a cracked IC but not a Radiator.

Better in front.
The ones on top are allways smaller and they suffer heat soke from the engine at slow speeds.
And as Tombie said, it just a packaging thing when wacking it together at the factory. The first up grade for a WRX is move the intercooler in front.
