Thread: Double DIN??

If you want double din with GPS, DVD, ipod e.t.c... Don't mess around with the lesser products. Stick with Alpine or Pioneer. Those cheap ebay HU's are exactly that... Cheap. Their software and hardware is questionable.

I've used both systems and am currently running with a Pioneer double din touchscreen in the subaru (gps, dvd, mp3, wma, blueteeth, ipod, SD... blah, blah) and it's brilliant. You can't beat pioneer for their user interface.
Alpine are also great... I've resorted to an Alpine single din HU in the disco with a lowly ipod interface.

I would like to install a double din unit in the diosco at some stage (if I keep it), so will be watching this thread with interest.

Yep, alpine, jvc or any other reputable brand is the way to go i think.
Looking through a couple of other threads where thebowner had converted to double din, all of them have had to move the climate control, cut and bog the plastic. A problem which im facing is my dash is that plastic, woodgrain material which will be impossible to bog, sand and repaint unless the dash is replaced completely with standard black.
Is there any other way around it without bogging, or epoxying (is that a word lol) the surround?

    Hi Tom,
I've text u 4 pics. They prob won't come through for a few hours
I did no bogging only sanding the edges where I cut to smooth it out.
The stereo actually sits on the climate control unit.
    Cheers. Michael.

Thanks for the pics michael, just wondering, on the shot of the stereo from above what is that surrounding the stereo? Is it foam or a Double DIN wraparound cover?

    +1.

I'd love to see the pics of a double din install without having to shift the CC unit.

These are the pictures Michael sent me, hope you don't mind Michael.

Look like I might have a problem with mine, being the plastic woodgrain colour, might look a bit too non-factory if I cut out the top of the climate control fascia.

Thanks to T & M for posting those pics.

Hmmmm... It certainly fits in there, but I'm not sure I'd be prepared to cut up the console like that. I think it would bug me that it wasn't neat, or factory looking after a little while.

I alReady had the double din. I took it out of my navara before I sold it.
Unfortunately it's the only screen available that can have camera turned on while driving and still listen to music or hear the directions from the gps.
We have horses that my partner competes on. Getting to the events can be quite bumpy due to the quality of the roads so we have a camera in the float.
I just figured that I'll replace the surround with another if I didn't like the look or if I wanted to take the unit out.
The black strip around the unit is foam tape.

Tom you would cut out the stereo surround and not the ac surround. You would still have the woodgrain look between the stereo and ac.

    Cheers. Michael.

Michael, it looks as though it's got the same layout (buttons e.t.c.) as my Pioneer unit, but has a very different looking software interface. What brand is it?
My pioneer unit also allows for the rear camera to run while music/gps is running in the background.
