To be honest I only used nutseerts as I have the tooling. If anyone wants them made, for the horizontal mounts I'll be using a two piece crush tube. One from behind with a flange on it thats internally threaded, and another tube welded to the back of the vertical plate. The bolt passing through the vertical plate and then screwing into the threaded tube. The idea is the two tubes are just shy of the length of the thickness of the sill so you get some slight crush and firm mounting.
For the bolt from underneath I'm adamant about keeping them recessed, but without nutserts I'm not sure about which way to go with nuts.
The big issue with nutserts, especially if using in the original holes is any deformation of the hole (and it will happen when drilling and setting the nuts will make the alignment of the thread to bolt out of parralell. On the vertical plane it's not too bad as you only pass through 3mm of plate so you can move the bolt around to make it work. But the ones from underneath were a headache as having the crush tube in the step means the bolt only alligns in one plane. It's really just a case of fit the lower bolts first, one at a time. And screw the bolts in first and gently tap L/R & in/out to make as straight as possible.
You can get cages nuts that fit into a square hole but I couldn't find my square drill. I think it's on fedex, along with my Nigerian inheritance.
After playing a bit they do stop that general spray pattern that occurs up the trailing edge of the guard and door, even with the mudflap missing. Can the sidesteps deflect general grim when traveling on gravel and dirt roads? LRT
