    Question coolant hose break

First trip in the new Disco this weekend (04 TD5, which is my 2nd one, had the oil in the harness and a fuel hose go in the last one). Went down to Pemberton with the tin lids and wife and had a great time. Its about a 700km round trip. Disco was purring like a dream. On the way back to Perth from Pemberton today i was going up a hill and suddenly power cut out and i had to pull over, temp guage rising, steam coming from left hand side of the bonnet... uh oh... Temp guage still rising...Engine off by this stage and i find when i open the bonnet that there is a coolant hose which is spitting coolant out.

There is coolant all down the side of the vehicle.... Not good.

The original hose seems to have broken about 4 inches from start of the hose near the radiater top. It already had a small length of rubber hose over the top with a hose clamp at each end. So i am guessing it was a patch up..didnt notice it befrore... Spewing i didnt look harder.

I put a couple of litres of rain water in the expansion tank after i had put the hose back in the sleeve and tightened the hose clamps up nice and tight. Seems alright when i start it back up. The next few km's i take it easy before stopping and checking it again.

Seems to be ok. Check it a few more times on the way home over the next couple of hours.

I plan to replace a few hoses as it seems by a few posts that they get brittle and break.

    My question is???

What should i now check to see if i have done any damage elswhere?

Is there a possability i have done major damage?

Replace all the hoses (don't forget the small one hiding behind the turbo). Refill and bleed the cooling system.

Use the vehicle, but keep a very close eye on the coolant level. With any overheating event there is a chance that engine damage (head gasket or head) will have occurred. The symptoms are likely to be further coolant loss and overheating.

from the factory it's a hard plastic hose with a short rubber section each end.
I replaced mine with 8mm heater hose. I will try to find a photo
it's a good idea to install an engine saver low coolant alarm.
    where in Perth are you?

    Cracked coolant pipes

Hi Mudguard, it is best to use the thicker, transmission coolant hose, rather than standard fuel or coolant hose. See the AULRO thread: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...t-pipes-2.html LRT

mudguard, i have lost water in my td5 twice, first time was a holed radiator which cost me a new head gasket. but i am a slow learner and ignored all the advice to instal an engine saver tm2! On the birdsville i holed my radiator again and lost all water (head gasket ok) this time it was 'cos the fan blade hit the heater hose..have a look to see how close they are. when you replace the hose make sure it tied tight, repeat - make sure it is tied securely. i now have an engine saver on my td5 block. i have an auto with which i tow a camper, and yes the auto couldn't stand the heat and failed. there goes another few $$grand. so now i am learning to be a faster learner and have put a tm2 engine saver on my auto box. there is another product which is recommended to me by a user which has several inputs - have a look at "madman" , the user (a relative) has one on his patrol and is most happy. i hope you are not a slow learner and instal a tm2 engine saver or two. ps if your fan blade wears a hole in the heater hose you will need a piece of 3/4 inch pipe.

Why not do away with the 8mm brass connector (another potential leak point) and go straight onto the reservoir with the 8mm heater hose?

    Just my 2c worth.

I think from memory the spigot on the tank is 10mm & i did not want to force the 8mm hose on.

replacement cooler hose and engine saver

Thanks for the info and pics fellas,

I have an engine saver waiting for me at home to fit. Will be home in a week and a half.

Also will be going down and getting some hose to replace the original ones with with.

on replacing hoses, is it best to replace a number of them. (I think i remember in one reply to replace all of them) So has anyone measured how much hose you need to buy to cover all of them ??????
