You cant get lower than low first whether it be auto or manual. Uphill you can select say second and it will no change down to first...so you use more torque without wheelspin...or you have a manual where you take control completely and there is no running on down hill from the torque converter.

Command shift in the D3/D4/RRS/new FFRR is basically manual control of the auto box. Given the way it holds the 2.5tonnes down steep hills I suspect the torque converter locks (like it does in 6th ay highway speeds) behaving very much like a manual does with engine breaking - however I haven't confirmed the TC does actually lock but it certainly feels like it.

great thread,I am learning heaps about my new d2a v8 without actually trying it[yet],so if the hill descent is factory set at 7km is it possible to set it with a nanacom\faultmate etc to a lower speed,7km seems way to fast to crawl down steep rocky stuff.
