    Be careful with it engaged when in reverse down slopes on sand....
    Not useful at all.....

    Reversing down a large sand dune can be difficult.. i have found that the hdc engaged when reversing can make it a lot more difficult to stay on the chosen line.

    Oh yes there was a thread somewhere.

    But I agreed with Aaron, I played with the HDC at our recent trip to Lancelin (WA) to see how it went and all it wanted to do was lockup the wrong wheels at the wrong time.

    On firmer surfaces it behaves better but is still too fast for my liking.

    Perhaps I am not hard core enough to have the the HDC getting me locked up all the wrong way. Has always worked as designed for me. Would make you wonder if your brakes need attention if it is grabbing all wrong?

    Hi John,

    The system is working as designed. But the designed is not very refined. The issue is with soft sand not providing much resistance to the braking effort, so when the HDC applies braking to the wheels they tend to lockup. The system is not very smart, i.e it can not learn. It just reacts to if the wheel is locked or not.

    Ow, I've been there.Had the Disco turn sideways and nelly roll. Had to drag the front up hill to save it. Biggest scare 4wheeling Ive had.
    The other thing that can happen is it over heats and shuts down ie releases the brakes. Better not to use it.

    I once tried to climb up a very steep incline for about 400 meters it was all covered in small loose rocks, nearly got to the top when all 4 wheels were spinning in one spot, so then I put it in reverse and tried to slowly go back down, but what was happening was the front was trying to come around, which is awful on a steep incline, Hit the HDC let go of all breaks, left it in reverse and held the steering straight, it was unbelieveable as the HDC controlled the front from coming past which you could feel that it wanted to. It was trying all the way down, the breaks would just adjust and correct it so it remains stright the EBD was doing it's job and came down that hill safely and straight to my surprise. After tryig again but this time only went up alittle and tried to bring the d2 down without HDC it was nearly impossible to keep it straight on such a loose surface...

    Do you have your center diff lock working? Losing the front while backing down is the really dangerous feature of not having a CDL. I've found my HDC to be really effective on dry, loose surfaces but haven't had to use in on really wet slippery ones. Anticipate the slope and get it controlling the car before it gets really steep and it's not fast at all at least on my late 2002 vehicle.
