The auto gearbox is responsible for limp mode more often than anything else. Do the M + S lights come on?

No warning lights, just this partial shutdown of the motor. If left a little while it starts and drives perfectly for a distance before losing power and stalling.

Sounds like you may have a fuel pump fault, does the sound of the pump change at all when left for a short period, does it rev in neutral ok.
I would check the pressure first and go from there.

    Guys,
I have a 2004 TD5 D2a which is doing exactly the same thing after a heavy session of sand driving on Goolwa beach. When I left the beach I was in what I now understand to be "limp home mode". The gearbox was understandably hot but no warning lights came on. Whilst on the beach due to the unusally soft sand I remained in high range but locked the gearbox in 2nd with the CDL engaged and I drove like this for around 9kms (no faster than 40km/h) and the car coped very well with no signs of getting bogged.
Now I have the car in limp mode and suggestions of oil in the engine and injector looms as well as a possible fuel pump failure have been suggested as to the cause but without a nanocom I cannot be sure. As far as the gearbox is concerned the M&S lights have not come on at all and the car starts first time but idles in neutral albeit lumpy but responds to a prod on the accerator. Of course when you move off you get the limp home performance descibed below.
Before I begin pulling out the looms is there anyway (without a nanocom or taking the car to the mechanic) I can rule out the gearbox as the culprit as I'm sure this is where my problem lies?
    Many thanks
    Rob

Have you checked you engine harness for oil ingress?
If the engine ECU is not giving the Auto ECU the correct signals then the auto will play up, as it protects itself from wrong signals and poor drivibilty.

Thanks guys turned out to be oil ingress in the injector harness and magnified by a slowly dying fuel pump. Both now replaced and she is as good as new.

    Cheers
    Rob
